ANNOUNCING: VT EPSCoR Undergraduate Research Internship Positions available Summer 2024 (the Science of Stories)

Vermont EPSCoR’s Science of Online Corpora, Knowledge, and Stories (SOCKS) research team is currently recruiting 12 undergraduate students for an exciting ten-week, paid internship opportunity based at the University of Vermont (UVM) beginning June 10, 2024.

SOCKS is a large, multi-disciplinary effort funded by the National Science Foundation, that revolves around stories as an essential part of how people comprehend, explain, predict, and seek to navigate the world. SOCKS supports the Digital Humanities by developing a powerful approach to quantifying both individual stories and ecologies of stories through massive data collection, natural language processing, and large language models—computer-based encodings of the meaningful connections between words and phrases.

The following research areas are available:

  • Indigenous voices in global environmental governance
  • Data ethics, privacy, and narrative bias 
  • Social and health narratives
  • Analysis of local news stories and programs

Other faculty mentors may be available from the SOCKS faculty on the social and health teams. If you are interested in working with anyone in particular, be sure to list that in your statement of research interest. The range of research areas in which students may participate is quite extensive. SOCKS interns delve into research projects— an opportunity not often available during the academic year. Projects are markedly different from most course-based work in that they are open-ended and part of a much larger research program.

Summer Research Internship at Van Andel Institute, Applications Due Feb. 1, 2024

Van Andel Institute is now accepting applications for the 2024 Summer Internship Program for undergraduate students. Applicants are required to submit a complete online application as well as combine their cover letter, resume and official transcript as a single electronic pdf file to upload with the online application. To be eligible, applicants must also have a GPA of 3.0 or higher and be currently enrolled in an undergraduate science-related degree program. Applicants that are either currently enrolled in high school (or dually enrolled in high school and college), have graduated with Bachelor’s degree before the internship start date or are currently enrolled in Master’s, DO, PhD or MD program are ineligible. We also require two letters of recommendations be submitted by your recommenders to undergrad@vai.edu. Applicants are NOT to submit their own letters of recommendation.

Summer Research at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University

Applications are open for a 10-week research experience that will allow undergraduates the chance to work alongside experienced faculty mentors and explore pressing aerospace problems at Embry-Riddle.

The Interdisciplinary Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Program provides total immersion into all aspects of laboratory work along with other enrichment activities. Students receive a $5,000 stipend, with their housing and meals covered.

During the REU program, students will use our leading-edge laboratories to conduct multidisciplinary research in aerospace engineering, chemistry and applied space biology with a goal of improving future space materials science and human diagnostic technology.

The research will be housed in Embry-Riddle’s College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Engineering, with most of the College of Engineering research done in labs at the MicaPlex, an incubator for innovative new companies and the cornerstone building of the university’s renowned Research Park.

Voyager Scholarship Application Deadline March 22, 2023

The Voyager Scholarship–the Obama-Chesky Scholarship for Public Service is open: January 25, 2023 through March 22, 2023 3:00 pm Central Time

What is it? The Voyager Scholarship helps students pursuing careers in public service by providing access to travel and education. Benefits include:

  • Financial aid up to $50,000
  • Summer Voyage: With a budget of $10,000, students will design their own summer voyage between their junior and senior year of college. The experience will allow students to pursue internships or mentorship opportunities anywhere in the world that will broaden their horizons and prepare them for careers in public service. Students will also be able to stay in homes on Airbnb using credits provided by Airbnb.
  • 10-year travel stipend: After graduation, Airbnb will provide the students with a $2,000 travel credit every year for 10 years, totaling $20,000.
  • Fall Summit: students will be invited to a summit to help define and inspire their public service journey.
  • A network of leaders: students will be invited to an ongoing speaker series, giving them access to a network of leaders. This network of leaders will expose them to new areas of service and innovations happen

Applicants to the Voyager Scholarship must:

  • Plan to enroll full-time in their junior year of study at an accredited four-year college or university in the United States (including U.S. Territories) in Fall 2023. Eligible students are finishing their sophomore year in Spring 2023 and will be considered juniors based on total number of credits earned at their institution by Fall 2023. (Students transferring from a two-year to a four-year college as juniors for the 2023-2024 academic year are eligible.)
  • Have four (4) semesters or six (6) quarters of full-time academic coursework remaining before graduating
  • Have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, or equivalent
  • Have demonstrated a commitment to public service
  • Plan to pursue a career in public service upon graduation*
  • Be a United States (U.S.) citizen, U.S. permanent resident (holder of a Permanent Resident Card), or an individual granted deferred action status under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals Program (DACA)

NIDA Summer Research Internship Program–Drug Abuse Research–Apps due 2/10/23

2023 NIDA Summer Research Internship Program

The NIDA Summer Research Internship Program supports all students with a focus on increasing underrepresented populations in drug abuse research. Through this program, undergraduates age 18 and older are introduced to the field of substance use and addiction research by participating in research internships with NIDA’s distinguished scientists at universities across the United States. Students work with leading scientists for eight weeks during the summer. The internship may include laboratory experiments, data collection, data analysis, formal courses, participation in lab meetings, patient interviews, manuscript preparation, and literature reviews. In addition, it is expected that each intern will deliver a formal presentation on their research project at the end of the internship.

Eligibility:

  • This program provides experiential summer research internships for undergraduate students from all backgrounds, with a goal of enhancing the representation of students from underrepresented backgrounds (American Indian/Alaska Native, Black/African American, Hispanic/Latino, Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander) in addiction-related research.
  • Graduating 2023 college seniors are eligible to apply.
  • Applicants must be at least 18 years old by May 31, 2023 and must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents of the United States (no exceptions).
  • Individuals who have already participated in the NIDA Summer Research Internship Program are no longer eligible to apply.
  • Students must be committed to working for 8 consecutive weeks during the summer (some schedule flexibilities may be allowed).

Scope of Support:

  • Interns will receive a salary in the amount of $15.00 per hour for a maximum of $4,800 for eight (8) weeks.
  • Internship experiences may be virtual or in-person.
  • Interns may receive a housing reimbursement for up to $2,500 (upon sending NIDA proper documentation of these expenses) if they are required to travel to a different state for their internship. After accepting an internship position, the intern will be required to cover any additional costs for housing and other expenses accrued including but not limited to utilities, cable, Wi-Fi, and meals. NIDA understands that some locations have a higher cost of living and additional housing support will be considered with proper documentation on a case-by-case basis.
  • Interns may also receive a travel reimbursement for up to $500 for travel to and from the internship site, including but not limited to: bus, train, metro, airplane, uber, taxi, and parking.
