C3- Summer Research Opp in the Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences and Mathematics

As you think about summer plans, you may want to take a look at the C3 (Creating Connections Consortium) summer research opportunities at the University of California, Berkeley and Columbia University. Three current Middlebury students have participated in the program.

Application deadline is February 1, 2015.

Who can apply? The program invites applications from current sophomores and juniors. First-years may also be considered. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Students from historically underrepresented groups, and/or first generation college students or others who pursued paths to college in the face of adversity, such as societal, economic or academic disadvantages are strongly encouraged to apply.

Which research areas are supported? Research projects in the arts, humanities, humanistic social sciences and mathematics are welcome. You do not need to be a major/prospective major in these fields to apply! (Note—Columbia and Berkeley also have other summer research programs in additional fields of study.)

What are the benefits? A generous summer stipend, campus housing, transportation costs to/from Berkeley or New York City! You’ll be part of a faculty-mentored project, learn about graduate school admissions and GRE preparation, expand your professional network, and be part of a cohort of other college students from liberal arts colleges.

Summer Amgen Scholars Program at Harvard

Check it out! Harvard University has been named one of ten U.S. institutions that will be offering a ten-week Amgen Scholars Program in the summer of 2015.  This new Harvard program, with an emphasis on biotechnology research, will afford a diverse cohort of rising undergraduate juniors and seniors the opportunity to work in laboratories of faculty across the Harvard universe, including the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering, the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, the Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, and the Division of Medical Sciences at Harvard Medical School. In addition to an engaging, formative research experience, Harvard-Amgen Scholars will live among over 300 undergraduates residents of the Harvard Summer Undergraduate Research Village community in one of the historic Houses along the Charles River.

U.S. Department of Energy Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship Program (MLEF)
This program provides students with an opportunity to gain and develop research skills with the DOE’s Office of Fossil Energy for 10 weeks over the summer. Stipends start at $600 per week and eligible Fellows will receive an additional travel and housing allowance. The Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship (SULI) Program
Provides 10 week summer research experiences, under the guidance of laboratory/facility staff scientists or engineers, on projects supporting the DOE mission. Summer ORISE Fellowship Opportunity at CDC
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Fellows focus on public health issues related to the environment. Candidates will join projects associated with developing and applying new methods to characterize and quantitate biochemical markers that are relevant in environmental exposures and chronic diseases. $2,700 per month stipend. The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) Diversity Summer Research Training Program (DSRTP)
10 week summer program interested in increasing students from backgrounds underrepresented in biomedical research. Research covers both basic and clinical investigation in a NIH laboratory. $2,600 stipend, housing and travel expenses. 10 week summer REU program at BCMB Department at UT-Knoxville. Graduate Study Opportunity

Columbia University’s Master of Public Administration in Environmental Science and Policy Dean’s Fellowship

Juniors interested in careers in the foreign service–check out the Pickering Undergraduate Fellowship

We were just notified that the Pickering Undergraduate Fellowship is indeed happening this year. Deadline is January 23, 2015–so you need to hustle! The Pickering provides two years of funding for students planning to pursue careers in the foreign service. There is an undergraduate fellowship that provides funding for senior year in college and the first year of a masters program AND a graduate fellowship that provides funding for a two-year masters program. Who is eligible for the Pickering Undergraduate Fellowship?

  • Only individuals who are United States citizens at the time of application will be considered.
  • Applicants must be in the junior year of undergraduate study (or equivalent).
  • Applicants must be expecting to receive their bachelor’s degree in spring 2016.
  • Winners are expected to enroll in a two-year, full-time master’s degree program in an academic field relevant to the work of the Foreign Service.
  • The Fellowship does not fund law or joint law degree programs.
  • Only U.S. institutions based in the U.S. are eligible.
  • Applicants must be available to fulfill the summer internship obligations (summer 2016 & 2017)
  • Applicants must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or higher on a 4.0 scale at the time of application.
  • A cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or higher on a 4.0 scale must be maintained throughout participation in the program.
