New Gates-Cambridge Scholar–Sky Feuer!

As much as I tell students how useful it is just preparing fellowship applications and essays–and it does really help for those grad school essays–it’s just plain thrilling when a student wins a fellowship or scholarship. So congratulations to Sky Feuer, who was just selected as one of 29 new Gates-Cambridge scholars from the US.  You can read about Sky and her plans at Cambridge on the Gates-Cambridge website.

Freeman Indonesia Nonprofit Internship Program

The Summer 2010 application deadline is February 15, 2010.
The Freeman Indonesia Nonprofit Internship Program (FINIP), funded by the Freeman Foundation, aims to develop student leaders and strengthen the nonprofit sector in Indonesia. IIE will select and pair 10 Indonesian students pursuing U.S. degrees with 10 U.S. undergraduates and arrange internships for them to work together in an Indonesian nonprofit organization.

In addition to the practical internship experience, U.S. participants will be enrolled in an Indonesian language and culture course which will provide, two hours per day for four days each week, intensive language instruction (60 contact hours). It is expected that the American student’s home institution will award credit for successful completion of the language and culture program. Indonesian participants will complete an online course introducing them to NGOs, their purpose and their administration.

As part of the 9-week experience, from June 15 to August 17, 2010, the Freeman Interns will participate in a three-day orientation and a final capstone seminar in Jakarta, organized by IIE’s partner organization, the Indonesian International Education Foundation (IIEF). Internships and coursework will be arranged by IIEF in three cities: Jakarta, Bandung and Yogyakarta. All program-related costs will be covered.

Upon returning to the U.S., students will be expected to share their experiences with peers on their home campuses and to explore ways to incorporate what they learned over the summer into their academic and professional careers.
