Middlebury has been invited to participate in the USA Rugby 7′s National Championship next week in College Station, Texas on the campus of Texas A&M.  The MCRC will begin the competition on Friday, November 30 in pool play against Cal, Arkansas State, and NC State. You can watch the live match webcast at usarugby.org and of course follow our in-game twitter updates @themcrc.

GO BLUE!!!!

This Saturday, the boys in blue traveled to Amesbury, MA to participate in the ECRC 7’s tournament.  They played a fantastic brand of rugby, some might even dare to employ the adjectival “champagne” to describe their style.  Led by superlative play from 7’s veteran Dylan Whitaker, and all-world high-stepper Allan Stafford, the Blue run the table in pool play, winning by quasi-absurd margins.  In the playoffs, they blow past UConn 60-0, and then knock off defending 7’s champions BC by a score of 31-5.

The finals see the MCRC face off against a Northeastern team hungry for revenge after their loss to the Blue in 15’s just two weeks ago.  The game is more ruck-centric than the speedy MCRC would have preferred.  Northeastern does a good job of slowing down the recycle and not giving our back line the chance to shine.  Much to everyone’s surprise, the game is scoreless at half time.

Both teams battle for control in the second half, but the Blue strike first blood.  Whitaker runs a great line and punches through the gain-line before popping off to a streak of light later identified as Allan Stafford.  Under the posts this blast of light races and the boys go up 7-0.

With two minutes left, a series of strong runs by Northeastern sends their winger around the corner and under the posts.  The game is knotted at 7 as the teams head to a sudden death overtime.

In OT an unfortunate call and a tough bounce end threats generated by Stasiuk’s promising run and Sirkia’s cheeky kick.  Both teams are utterly exhausted as possession changes hands back and forth, but Northeastern manages to overlap on the far sideline and touch down in the corner moments before Stafford can get there.

An inch here or an inch there and the MCRC are ECRC 7’s champions, but heads are held high.  Coach John Phillips consoles the team, saying that they came here to prove they can play at a high level and that they have “made the rest of the league take notice.” The team will look to take increased ball skills and a better understanding of how to recognize and exploit space from this excursion into 7’s.  If they can bring this form into the rest of the 15’s season, they have a chance to do something truly special.

As for this past Saturday, the boys left absolutely everything they had on the field and had a blast doing so.  You can’t ask for anything more than that; truly a special day for the MCRC.

The day’s roster: Brian Sirkia (C), Ben Stasiuk (VC), Allan Stafford, Dylan Whitaker, Adam Schreiber, Alec Mackenzie, Vincent Mariano Alex Ruocco, Geoff Genova, Aaron Yappert, Don Song, Nate Brown, Luke Dauner, Madison Stebbins, and John Hawley.

Please note The MCRC ALUMNI WEEKEND  is October 19-21, and that The MCRC is away on Fall Family Weekend, October 5-7.

In the first East Coast Rugby Conference 7s tournament the MCRC makes it to the semi-final, where they lose to the University of Albany 7 – 12. Boston College ends up overall winners after they pull out the performance of the tournament beating favorites Northeastern. Great day of rugby for all teams involved and Middlebury Rugby would like to extend a very big thank you to the Middlesex Barbarians for hosting the event, to John Durant, UAlbany coach, for organizing a very well run tournament and to the Harrison family for hosting our entire team!

Middlebury starts the day off at a disadvantage having lost influential back Jack Maher ’12 the day before leaving them with a man fewer than the other teams. Still, spirits are very high amongst this young team and they are more than up to the task of representing Middlebury Rugby. The 11 man side is led by scrum-half Don “The Shoes” Song ’13 and opens their tournament with a convincing win over Southern Connecticut 19 – 7.

Middlebury had a good outing at the Newport Sevens this past Saturday winning their opening game and losing the next two games by small margins. The team comprised several current players and young alumni and finally this Middlebury group has begun to adapt to the sevens style: moving the ball and avoiding contact on offense. Amazing job by team captain Michael “Renaissance” Pappa ’11 in organizing and leading the team.

Despite three losses The MCRC still enjoyed a good day out at the Newport 7s tournament. The MCRC struggled to put together consistent and fluid 7′s style play but improved with each game and by the third match we were poised to be a strong competitor. Our first game was against eventual tournament winners: The Darkside, a highly talented 7′s team that featured two former Middlebury rugby greats: Epeli “Fiji” Rokotuiveikau ’04 and Matthew Volz ’07.  Our second game was against CT Collegiate Sevens and we lost a close 3rd game to a tough New London team and were unfortunately eliminated. Alumnus Dan Richards ’95 was a force to be reckoned with on the field with strong runs and even stronger tackles. Future MCRC hopeful Parker Gilbert (now entering his senior year in high school and hoping to start at Midd in 2011) led the team strategically much of the day alternating between scrum half and fly half. Steve McKenna ’13.5 found himself at home on the wing making great tackles once he got used to the different flow of 7′s rugby. We would also like to thank Dylan Whitaker for supplying us with a few extra players that he knew at the tournament to fill out our ranks. All in all it was a great day and we look forward to another run next year.

The Newport 7′s Team: Michael Pappa ’11, Sam Harrison ’11, Parker Gilbert, Drew Harasimowicz ’11, Steve McKenna ’13.5, Dylan Whitaker ’13, Dan Richards ’95 (with cameos from: Matt Volz ’07 & Epeli Rokotuiveikau ’04)

Spotted at the Tourney: Linda Pappa P’11, Elsie Menicucci, Danielle Kearns.
