Introduction to Open Textbooks

Nick Shockey, Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition

Open textbooks provide the possibility of improving student learning outcomes while reducing the cost of education. A growing body of evidence indicates that the learning outcomes in courses taught with Open Educational Resources (OER) are equal to or, in many cases, better than those achieved with expensive course materials. Furthermore, a recently completed survey of 24 colleges and universities that promote the adoption of OER on campus found that institutions saw an average of $267,363 in estimated student savings per year. On Tuesday, October 10th, from 12:15-1:15pm, Nick Shockey will provide an introduction to open textbooks, their benefits for students, and suggestions for adopting OER at Middlebury. Nick Shockey is the Director of Programs & Engagement at SPARC (the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition), a global coalition committed to making open the default for research and education.
