Oh, I just find deficit hysteria ridiculous. We create money ex nihilo. We don't don't use tax revenues to "fund" anything. Sadly, Obama trotted out the government is like a household canard so he's reaping what he sowed. The Federal government is nothing like a household unless the bills you owe are in a currency of your own creation.

But, politically, pretending to care about our debt makes one a "serious person".

Marty,

You may distrust Bloomberg's motives, but the sentiments he voiced - that Obama failed to exercise leadership in this debate - have been expressed by any number of pundits, and not all of them the usual Republican suspects. In the wake of the supercommittee's failure, of course, pundits on both sides are engaging in the inevitable fingerpointing, and thus for every Milbank charge that it was the Republicans that were obstructionist, there is another pundit citing Democratic intransigence for the failed negotiations. I'll let others debate who was most culpable. My only point is that while there is undoubtedly enough blame to go around, the bitter partisan fingerpointing simply reinforces my basic point that there really wasn't any upside for Obama to have gone to the mat with these two groups one more time.

Dana Milbank in today's Washington Post clearly places the blame for the the Supercommittee's failure squarely on the shoulders of Senator Jon Kyl of Arizona. Here's the link: http://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/jon-kyls-search-and-destroy-mission/2011/11/22/gIQA5BZVmN_story.html I don't think the Committee had a chance of success. The Republicans weren't going to budge. And Matt, please stop citing New York's current Mayor. His idea of appropriate governing is to jam a third term for himself down the throats of a complacent City Council. I almost called the Council members a bunch of dead turkeys, but considering tomorrow, you haven't seen this sentence. Have a good Thanksgiving. Marty

Putting aside how absurd the deficit committee is (obviously we need larger deficits to reduce UE and deficits will naturally fall when economy improves...), I agree with your assessment.

All Obama got was grief with his debt ceiling speeches. He just basically ignored this super-committee stuff and honestly it doesn't seem like a big story, probably b/c he didn't involve himself.

If he had involved himself, it still would have collapsed and then that would be seen as a sign of weakness.
