Max,

In theory it does, but the difference is that Huntsman has already been seen side-by-side with the other Republicans and - so far - he just isn't getting much traction. This is despite a heavy dose of initial publicity when he joined the race, and continued support among a committed group of moderates. As Perry is finding out, however, moderation doesn't play well in the nominating phase of the selection process. By not showing up on stage next to her competitors (but still showing up), Palin has avoided getting slotted by the media. It's early, of course, so we shouldn't count Huntsman out (or Palin in), but so far he hasn't caught fire.

Huntsman is read as far too "liberal" to win the primaries (he's actually not very liberal at all, but these days. . .) and Chris Christie, in my opinion, will always remain a fantasy candidate for some conservatives - he won't run (insert obligatory fat joke here), and they would quickly run from him if he did. It seems like this is a year of Fred Thompsons for the Republicans

Maybe I am overestimating the volatility of the selection process, but with at least four months before the primaries actually begin, it seems like there's still plenty of time for broken hearts, dark horses, and black swans.

In that spirit, I wonder: why Palin? If avoiding the front-runner bulls-eye is indeed desirable, doesn't that put someone like Huntsman in a similarly advantageous position?

Yep. Of course, the media focus on the alternative candidate du jour is Christie, but he's shown no indication that he's interested in running, whereas Palin has been running essentially since stepping down as Alaska governor.

This makes a really interesting point about Palin. I agree that she benefits from Perry's 'collapse'; just a couple of weeks ago, it looked as though there wasn't a good spot for her in the field, but if Perry loses steam there will be a healthy chunk of voters looking for a not-Romney candidate
