Marty - Sorry about the delay between posts. Sometimes my real job becomes significantly more real, preventing me from posting as frequently. You are right about the positive reception Obama's Tucson speech received - and with good reason. In fact, I was working on a post comparing the Palin and Obama speeches when your comment arrived. I'll try to get it out soon.

Matt--are you away? I'm surprised that you have not commented on President Obama's speech in Tucson. I heard one commentator say that mourner-in-chief should be considered among a President's responsibilities. Certainly that speech was well received (even Republicans agree) and polls seem to reflect that. Also, consider what the infamous ex-Governor of Alaska had to say and how, other than her hard core supporters, the polls indicate a step backwards for her. Your thoughts? Thanks.

i'll buy attempts at expansionary policy prior to an election - it makes perfect sense - but the idea that a President would intentionally hurt the economy is far-fetched at best.

Zach,

I can assure you that "Mr. Hamilton" was quite serious. He would argue, I think, that despite his choice of words, in truth all presidents need to do is tweak the cycle enought to move it to an expansionary phase is all that's necessary to win election. Moreover, there is some serious scholarship (admittedly most done by economists, so take it with the proverbial dose of salt) that suggests the historical timing of expansionary business policies just prior to elections is not purely coincidental. Like you, however, I am skeptical that any president has the tools or know-how to manipulate the business cycle, by themselves, to serve their own political purposes.

Was "Mr. Hamilton" being serious or is he really as naive as to think that the administration (any administration, for that matter) is both competent and powerful enough to intentionally destroy and subsequently rebuild the entire American economy in a four-year period?
