Aeschylus c. 525 – c. 455 BCE

Aeschylus is known as the father of Greek tragedy. The genre of tragedy begins with his work, and understanding of earlier tragedies is largely based on inferences from his surviving plays. Winston “paraphrases” the following quote from Aeschylus’s Agamemnon “By the sword you did your work, and by the sword you die.”

 

 

 

Friedrich Nietzsche (1844–1900)

Friedrich Nietzsche was a German philosopher and cultural critic. His work has largely influenced Western philosophy and modern intellectual history. Langdon draws quotes Nietzche’s Beyond Good and Evil (1886), a major 19th-century philosophical work.
