Highway 61 revisited, Bob Dylan

Zuma, Neil Young... Cortez the Killer has a Pink Floyd sound to it, but done with Neil Young grit.

Melting Pot, the Charlatans
Northern Soul, The Verve... some brit-pop albums with a little more edge and indie sound that Oasis or Pulp.

And for some needed Hip Hop picks:

Illmatic, Nas. It's got young energy, and has an unrelenting rhythm.
Clin d'oeil, The Jazz Liberatorz.. the new wave.

There's no way I wasn't replying to this post. I thought the Okkervil River was the best album of 2007, but it was close--lots of great records released last year. In addition to many of the acts you listed, I would add:

LCD Soundsystem--Sound of Silver
The Shins--Wincing the Night Away
Illinois--What the Hell Do I Know? EP
Zookeeper--Becoming All Things
Dinosaur Jr.--Beyond
The Broken West--I Can't Go On, I'll Go On
Feist--The Reminder
Lily Allen--Alright, Still
Jay Z--American Gangster
Bruce Springsteen--Magic
Elliott Smith--New Moon
Arcade Fire--Neon Bible
Panda Bear--Person Pitch
White Stripes--Icky Thump
Klaxons--Myths of the Near Future

Man, I bought a lot of records last year. And no, it's not that I can't edit, it's that all of these were truly "best of the year" candidates.

Speaking of Neil Young, the "Live at Massey Hall, 1971" disc was good enough to make one cry, were one so inclined to cry over rock and roll. Which one is. Speaking for oneself.

Sonic Youth's last album, "Rather Ripped," came out in 2006, so it doesn't make this list. But Hieu's comment reminded me of an album that came out last May that Matt and I both like. It's a debut album by a Swedish group called the Mary Onettes, though you could never guess the country of origin by the music, which has a kind of 80s/90's New Order sound. I added it to our list, giving us an even ten.
