Please read the following email from the OIS Staff regarding OPT.

Dear Student,

You are receiving this email because you have an end date on your I-20 between May and December of 2009.  All international students in F-1 status may apply for 12 months of work authorization after the end of your program. This work authorization is known as OPT or Optional Practical Training.  You may apply for OPT up to 90 days before the end of your program.

If you are graduating in May and will apply for OPT, the following steps are
recommended: First, view the OPT video.  [ http://www.miis.edu/ois/ois_newsletters.html]

If you have any questions after viewing the video, schedule an appointment with your international student advisor by emailing visas@miis.edu

After viewing the OPT video and related material, bring the OPT request form to your advisor for his/her signature.  You will then submit this completed form to OIS for the processing of your new I-20.  This I-20 will be used in your OPT application.

For more information on OPT, please view the following resources on the OIS website.  [http://www.miis.edu/ois/ois_newsletters.html].

You may also schedule an appointment with an International Student Advisor by emailing visas@miis.edu. Employment workshops for international students will also be held during the spring semester, so please check the OIS Blog for announcements. [ http://sites.middlebury.edu/oiss/ ]

Sincerely,

The OIS Staff

    Hello,
I am wondering what does ‘part time employment counts toward the 12 month full time total at half rate’ mean? Does that mean that if I would work part time for 2 months it would count as 1 month from the 12 months?
    Thanks ahead of time,
    Gita

  2. Kathleen Sparaco says:

Hi Gita, part-time for two months would mean that you are maintaining status during that time; it doesn’t count as one month of full-time. Does that help? Please email me at kathy.sparaco@miis.edu, if you have any questions.
