Interview in JGu’s Magazine on Lehre and Studium

I was honored to be invited to an interview on Middlebury’s partnership with Johannes Gutenberg Universität and joined Prof. Hornung (American Studies) to talk about the significance exchange programs have for JGu. The interview should appear in the new Lehre und Studium-Magazine shortly.

ACTFL, Texas, November 2014

I’m happy to let you know that ACTFL accepted a proposal of my colleague Sanae Eda (Director of the School in Japan) and myself for this year’s ACTFL-Conference in Texas. If any of you should be there, please let me know — it would be great to meet up and talk about old times or new times — who knows!

We’ll be giving a workshop on “Culture and Language Teaching: Integrated Portfolios in Japan and Germany” — so….

I hope to see you in Texas (or Mainz — or Berlin) soon!

Take care — and I’ll be back with more news on how our students liked their internships this semester.

All the best from the School in Germany -

Heike

C.V. Starr-Directors’ Conference in Berlin, Dahlem: Dec. 7 to Dec. 11, 2013

This year, the director of the School in Germany hosted the mid-year conference of directors of Middlebury Schools Abroad in Berlin. In our endeavor to incessantly improve our students’ learning experiences around the world, we got together for individual meetings and lively group discussions covering every aspect related to directing and designing study abroad programs focused on enabling students to effectively immerse themselves into their host culture, to improve their language skills and develop their skills at creating more and more independent academic and private lives during their time abroad. We also were happy to have Janice Abarbabanel, PhD, as our guest speaker, who joined us to share her Expertise on how to deal with the stress of shifting cultures. Time went by so fast, and we were intensely busy, but did have some time to sample some goodies and Christmas atmosphere in the heart of Berlin.

ACTFL-Conference, Orlando: Nov. 21 – Nov. 25

After participating in two pre-conference workshops exploring methods to teach culture via the tools of its language, the director joined forces with Prof. Roman Graf (German Dept., Middlebury), to give a presentation on “Study Abroad: Integral and Integrated Element of a Language Curriculum.” We explored the question of how students are prepared for their abroad-experience via a culture-focused language curriculum, and how specific elements of their abroad exprience, namely a core-course on German culture abroad, can support them with gaining knowledge and competence they can use when returning the home campus.
