Boy, this brings me back. I was a freshman in the fall of 1970 and took Oceanography, I believe from Professor Folger. I remember spending alot of time scraping and painting Midd's first vessel, the Bruno C. Schmidt (I also took the photos for the Campus when the boat was christened).
We finally got onto the Lake in October and spent a fair amount of our time documenting the sludge around the International Paper plant south of Ticonderoga. Glad to see Midd has a faster craft, because with a flank speed in the single digit knot range, the we spent a disproportionate amount of our lab periods motoring to and from our reserach collection area.

I have fond memories of doing work on the lake with Dr. Folger--and once, helping him move the small boat available in the early 1970s from its southern berth to further north on the lake as our class studies dictated--naming this new boat after Dr. Folger is a very fitting tribute to a man who inspired many.

I was just at the Rosenstiel School at the University of Miami for Parents Weekend and saw their research vessel, a coastal research platform that frequently embarks on research trips for other governmental and research groups. WIll the Folger be used by others outside the Middlebury COmmunity?

This is a very important national development for the College. During a Midd/Duke/Cal Alunmi trip to Alaska this summer, one of our faculty participants from Duke made a presentation about the fleet of research vessels operated by various Universities and Research Institutes in the U.S. Middlebury joins a short and distinguished list as the latest addition much to the delight and amazement of our fellow travelers. I would like to know more about how this was accomplished during a period of reduced Government funding for maritime R@D. Bravo to those who conceived of the project and secured the grant/funding. What is our mission?
