What a well-stated point. Thanks for writing, sharing, and discussing this subject.

Thank you for covering this most important event. I would however hesitate to agree that the panel represented a full spectrum of the Middlebury community. I am but one student with a certain set of experiences and perspective; I do not (nor do I believe I should) represent all or even the majority of Middlebury Students. Neither is Kaireth necessarily representative of many or most International students.

To my great pleasure, many more students did attend, participated in a wonderful dialogue, and hopefully spurred more action around socio-economics and money at Middlebury. I am not worried about these students- they those chose to attend and represent themselves. My cause for commenting is more out of a concern for the people who CHOSE NOT to show up. These are the members of our community who are desperately missing from the picture, and they are key to unlocking any sustainable change in mutual understanding and equality in the future.

Once again thanks for covering the event!

Thanks so much for writing about this, Blair. I was sorry not to be able to attend. I did follow up with a couple of the student organizers and your post helps add even more depth. Kudos to the students who organized!

Those interested in this topic might also like to know that efforts are underway to create a venue for students to explore issues of "Privilege and Poverty" by combining academic courses with experiential opportunities (with local community partners, and beyond --e.g., the Shepherd Alliance Poverty Internships with an application deadline of Jan. 15, 2012). Glad these topics are being raised in multiple ways here on campus.
