Our program combines theory (through coursework) and application (through experiential learning) to build a relevant and powerful foundation for your career. Our master’s program is designed to prepare graduates for leadership positions in one of the Energy and Environmental job markets where public policy and management skills are in high demand.
Why an MS in Public Policy and Management?
The MSPPM program gives you skills in critical core areas for policy-making and analysis: information technology, data analytics, economics, leadership, communication and policy. You build on this foundation with a concentration area in either Energy Systems or Environmental Policy which gives you a deep understanding of the technical and policy issues in these fields.

Who: Students from science and engineering backgrounds.
What: This concentration (a partnership between the Heinz College’s School of Public Policy and Management and the College of Engineering’s Energy Science, Technology and Policy (EST&P) master’s degree program) explores the science, technical and policy issues related to energy production, consumption and distribution.
Careers: Management and policy positions in federal and state government, consulting firms, non-profit organizations, oil and gas producers, power producers, regulated utilities, transmission and distribution organizations, energy related technology companies, and Energy Supply Companies.
Coursework: Core courses at Heinz College’s School of Public Policy and Management, energy courses at College of Engineering, electives can be taken across the campus
Experiential learning: Summer internship in the US or abroad, team-based capstone project course, opportunities with Scott Institute for Energy Innovation and other centers
Environmental Policy

Who: Students from any academic background.
What: This concentration provides a depth of knowledge in field-related areas including sustainable development, planning, economics, and environmental technology and policy.

Coursework: Core and concentration courses at Heinz College’s School of Public Policy and Management, electives can be taken across the campus
Experiential learning: Summer internship in the US or abroad, team-based capstone project course, applied research opportunities with numerous centers across the campus
