2010 Summer Internship–Orton Foundation

The Orton Family Foundation is offering 1-2 funded summer internships to students interested in land use planning, civic engagement and community development. The intern(s) will work closely with Foundation staff to assist in research, writing and other activities in support of core program functions. The intern will be based in the Foundation’s offices in the Marbleworks complex, Middlebury, Vermont.

Position Responsibilities

  • Research and develop content for the Planning Collaborative, a new interactive database of planning tools, methods and case studies
  • Help grow and support Community Almanac, an online tool where people can share stories, photos and videos about their communities
  • Provide short-term support on individual projects
  • Support a variety of communications and administrative functions for events, print and electronic media Key Qualifications
  • Affinity for the Foundation’s mission and some knowledge of community planning and civic engagement fields through study and/or work experience
  • Interest and awareness of land use planning, civic engagement and community development
  • Excellent writing and editing skills
  • Excellent research and analysis skills
  • Strong knowledge of and affinity for computer technologies, including:
    • Microsoft Office, particularly Word and PowerPoint
    • Internet
    • GIS mapping (not required)
  • Strong organizational skills, including ability to work on several projects at the same time
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member
  • Interdisciplinary thinking and enthusiasm for learning and experimentation
  • Willingness to travel
  • Conscientiousness, dependability and an eye for detail

Compensation & Time Commitment

$4,000 stipend for 12 weeks (40 hours a week), starting on June 1 and ending on August 20, 2010 (dates are somewhat flexible).
