Finding Jobs when they aren’t on MOJO

While MOJO’s offerings are high quality, students can be frustrated with the small number of opportunities.

LACN (found on the first page of MOJO), has an even larger number of options; however, sometimes even those are not what you are looking for.

There are other options available to you.

  • Midd-Only Resources
  • Networking
  • Brute Force

Midd-Only Resources

Midd-Only Resources, which can be found here, contains job databases and more. They are high enough quality, that Middlebury pays for them, and contain a broader array of internship and job opportunities.

Networking

Networking is a crucial skill in your job search. After you have developed your network of family and friends, take a look at MiddNet, which can be found here. While you may be tempted, don’t use alumni contacts as a source for job/internship opportunities. Instead, take time before you contact someone to fully research their field, business and job title. Create a list of questions, and be direct in your communications. Use your contacts not as a feeding bowl of opportunities, but as a source of experience and aid. Networking allows you to understand the skills that are valued in your industry.

Brute Force

You should only use this option when you have exhausted all other means of job hunting. Begin with a target zip code, and keywords for your desired industry.

  1. Go to Google Maps.
  2. Type in your target zip code.
  3. Once your location has appeared, type in one or more of your industry keywords.
  4. A list of companies will appear on the left.
  5. Go to each company’s website, and find their career opportunities page.
  6. If there is an e-mail address available, send them your cover letter and resume. Remember: Always personalize your cover letter, and if you send a resume, you should always send a cover letter.
