Assessing Community Impact

How does your community-connected service, learning and research impact the community within which you work?  What is the impact on you?  How do your know when your actions lead to developed capacity or whether they contribute to unintended harm? Come to “Assessing Community Impact”, a workshop with facilitators Shannon Morrissey and Robert Burack from Break Away. Shannon and Robert will share their assessment framework as they invite you to explore and develop your own! David S. Stone ’74 Tree House Fund

Up to $2,200 total will be awarded this fall for one or several creative student projects that benefit Middlebury students, the environment, or the community, such as the tree house that David Stone ’74 built near the golf course for students and area kids to enjoy! Projects must be completed by Commencement, May 2015. Applications due by this Friday 10/17. Interested? Charter House info session

The Charter House Coalition is a nonprofit organization that aims to provide basic food and housing in and around the Middlebury community. During the long winter months, CHC provides families with a transitional housing program in the Charter House that is staffed mainly through volunteers. Want to help keep families warm this winter? Join in this volunteer info and training session on Sunday 10/19 at 1 PM in Ross B11 to find out more about the organization and how you can help!

The Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship (MLEF) Program provides students with an opportunity to gain and develop research skills with the Department of Energy’s Office of Fossil Energy for 10 weeks over the summer. For 20 years, this program has increased awareness of DOE research opportunities to students pursuing STEM degrees (science, technology, engineering and math). The goal of the program is to improve opportunities for women and minority students in these fields, however all eligible candidates are encouraged to apply.  Stipends start at $600 per week and eligible Fellows will receive an additional travel and housing allowance.  For more information, visit http://orise.orau.gov/mlef/.

 

2Color-BrownGoat There are two exciting opportunities at the Yiddish Book Center in Amherst, Massachusetts.

Recent graduates and current seniors who know Yiddish and have a strong background in Jewish studies or related fields can apply to the Yiddish Book Center’s Fellowship Program. Fellows spend a year as full-time members of our staff, developing valuable professional skills while working on the Center’s most important projects: education, oral history, online accessibility, translation, and bibliographic work with our ever-growing collection of books. Working with mentors, the Fellows also apply their ingenuity and personal expertise to the creation of new projects. Each fellow receives a stipend of $28,000 plus health insurance. The program runs from September 2015 to August 2016. Applications are due by January 5. (Click here for details.)

Current college students can apply to the Yiddish Book Center’s Steiner Summer Yiddish Program, which offers seven weeks of intensive language studies, tuition free. A beginner track for students who haven’t previously studied Yiddish includes daily three-hour language classes and an introductory course in Yiddish culture and history. Students who have completed one year of Yiddish can apply to the intermediate track, where they’ll take daily three-hour language classes and work on the Center’s ongoing projects in exchange for free housing and a $1,000 stipend. All students take part in workshops, film screenings, and cultural and social activities at the Center.

Students accepted to the Steiner Summer Yiddish Program receive free tuition and are eligible for academic credit from the University of Massachusetts. The 2015 program runs from June 7 to July 24. Applications are due by February 10. (Click here for details.)

The White House Internship Program provides a unique opportunity to gain valuable professional experience and build leadership skills. This hands-on program is designed to mentor and cultivate today’s young leaders, strengthen their understanding of the Executive Office of the President and engage them in public service opportunities.

Through MPI’s 4 to 8 week Summer Internship Program, interns assist the Program Directors in planning and leading programs on the ground in Ecuador and Nicaragua. Interested in getting involved at a local level? Attend the MiddAction Fair this Tuesday, September 16th 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. in Wilson Hall. This is a wonderful opportunity for you to engage in the local community. Whether you are a first year just arriving on campus or a senior looking for additional experience before graduation, this fair will have something for everyone.

Welcome to the Class of 2018 and returning students! At the Center for Careers & Internships (CCI) we have a ton of NEW programming in store for you this year. Below, I’d like to both introduce you to some of the new features we’ve added to our offerings and mention some of the new ways we’ve re-organized the work that we do for you.

 

Here’s What’s NEW:

  •  Quick Questions = Drop-Ins: We have replaced our Drop-Ins with Quick Questions and the NEW hours are from 1-3 P.M. Monday-Friday at Adirondack House.
  • Appointments to talk to an Adviser: We have a NEW online system in MOJO set up for you to make an appointment –appts. can be made at any time now–with one of our Advisers.  Please check out the profiles of our Advisers first to determine who the appropriate Career Adviser is to talk about the areas you are most interested in. So PLEASE do not call our office anymore to make an appointment, instead it’s self-serve and you can make your own even when the Adviser is asleep!
  • Senior JumpStart = Senior Meeting: We have replaced the infamous beginning of the year Senior Meeting with a NEW program called Senior JumpStart which includes a series of 1o career-related workshops ranging from the Arts to STEM. There is also a workshop for those of you that still don’t know what they want to be doing when they graduate. Each workshop is being offered twice at different times…so NO EXCUSES for not attending! Here is the link to a description of each Senior JumpStart workshop (go/ccijumpstart). I will be leading two different workshops on Careers in the Common Good and Careers in Environment & Energy.
  • Meet our Sophomore Peer Career Advisers (PCAs): These are NEWLY dedicated sophomore students who are trained to answer your questions and to assist you in finding the right resources to point you in the right direction. Check them out here.

Middlebury students, this program is tailor-made for you, in fact, recent Midd graduate, Marty Schnure ’11 recently received a Wild Gift grant for her start-up Maps for Good!

“Wild Gift selects budding social entrepreneurs, take them on a deep wilderness trip, and give them startup capital ($10,000) and expert mentorship to accelerate their idea. THEY DO THE REST.

Every year Wild Gift recruits outstanding new leaders to its Network of better-world entrepreneurs through an intensive application process. I am pleased to inform you that we have begun to accept applications for the 2015 class. Through a rigorous application process, we recruit dynamic young individuals (ages 21-35) with innovative, entrepreneurial ideas. Successful applicants exhibit a deep passion and commitment to wilderness and sustainability and the capacity to bring better world projects to fruition. Selected applicants receive a deep wilderness trek in Idaho, up to $10,000 in grant funding, and professional mentorship to refine a leadership project that will advance the stewardship of wild nature and sustainable human development. Wild Gift recipients become a part of the Wild Gift Network — a community of action-oriented individuals that will support them on their life-long journey to develop and promote more sustainable communities.”
