Without a significant, serious and immediate increase in diversity and inclusion, the conservation community will become a movement of the past instead of a guiding principle of the future. The Doris Duke Conservation Scholars Program at the University of Washington is a multi-summer, undergraduate experiential-learning program focused on the themes of biodiversity, food, climate, and water across urban and wild spaces.
Last summer, two dozen stellar freshmen and sophomores from all over the country — and diverse along all axes: race, ethnicity, socio-economics, area of study — gathered in WA for this immersion/field-based course. They traveled all over the state and addressed a range of conservation issues through a variety of ecological and social science lenses. The overarching theme? How we can best grow an inclusive and diverse conservation movement.

The English Open Doors Program is a fee-free, volunteer initiative which invites native and near-native speakers to volunteer-teach English in the Chilean public school classrooms. It is a part of the Ministry of Education in Chile and supported by the United Nations Development Program and their goal is to improve public education in Chile, and increase the level of opportunities available to students who can’t afford to pay for a privately funded education.
The English Open Doors Program has added a second volunteer service for the second semester in the Chilean Public school system! What does this mean for this year’s Middlebury graduates? For the first time, there are two program start dates in August! Students graduating in April, May, or June will have an increased chance to start their professional career with our fantastic opportunity!

Projects for Peace is an initiative for all students at the Davis United World College Scholars Program partner schools to design grassroots projects for the summer of 2015 – anywhere in the world - which promote peace and address the root causes of conflict among parties. We encourage applicants to use their creativity to design projects and employ innovative techniques for engaging project participants in ways that focus on conflict resolution, reconciliation, building understanding and breaking down barriers which cause conflict, and finding solutions for resolving conflict and maintaining peace. Through a competition on over 90 campuses, projects will be selected for funding at $10,000 each.

The Adirondack Watershed Institute Stewardship Program (AWISP) at Paul Smith’s College is a community based program designed primarily to educate the public about aquatic invasive species (AIS) issues pertaining to specific watersheds. Stewards interact with visitors at boat ramps and perform watercraft inspections intended to prevent the transport of AIS. The AWISP also fulfills research and service functions. The North East Water Resources Network has paid opportunities for undergraduate students to carry out research for 10 weeks during the summer – in their Vermont, Rhode Island and Delaware research locations.
Research interns will be part of teams who are investigating the impact of climate variability and extreme weather events on water quality and quantity across the north-south gradient from VT to DE. They will investigate how to provide valuable and rapid information to stakeholders (resource users, resource managers, and policy makers) to lead to more time-efficient and better-informed land and water use decision making.

The Davis Projects for Peace program is an invitation to undergraduates at the American colleges and universities in the Davis United World College Scholars Program to design grassroots projects that they will implement during the summer of 2015.
Undergraduate students at more than 90 college campuses across the United States, including those of you who will graduate this academic year, are eligible to design and submit proposals that address the goal of improving the prospects for peace in the 21st century. The top submissions from the participating campuses, including at least one from Middlebury, will receive funding of $10,000 with which to initiate projects anywhere in the world during the summer of 2015.
This week, the second annual Social Entrepreneurs Challenge was launched! Hosted on CrowdRise, the Challenge provides some of the world’s leading social entrepreneurs with an innovative platform to raise funds.
Organizations participating in the Challenge are recipients of our “Skoll Award for Social Entrepreneurship” and represent some of the most successful entrepreneurial organizations in the world.
Individuals can support and fundraise for participating social entrepreneurs and their gifts will be leveraged by the Skoll Foundation. This year, more than $3 million in prize and match funding will be available to participants.
