Vermont Businesses for Social Responsibility (VBSR) provides internship opportunities with local businesses and organizations to students at Vermont colleges and universities This program gives students the opportunity to explore career opportunities in Vermont, and also supports the fast-growing entrepreneurial economy in Vermont. Undergraduate and Graduate Studies students can be involved in our innovative internship program, as well as recent graduates up to two years post graduation. Every year Wild Gift recruits outstanding new leaders to its Leader Network. Through a rigorous application process, Wild Gift recruits dynamic young individuals (ages 21-35) with innovative, entrepreneurial ideas. Successful applicants exhibit a deep passion and commitment to wilderness and sustainability and the capacity to bring better world projects to fruition.

Addison County Poverty Internships offer meaningful opportunities to spend summer fighting poverty in Vermont. This year the paid internships will take place at the John Graham Homeless Shelter, the Addison County Council Against Domestic and Sexual Violence, and the Open Door Clinic. Interns will earn $9.20 per hour, 35 hours per week. Students can choose to reside on campus for $100 per week, meal plan included.

Midd alum Ruth Kelty ’95 with NOAA’s National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science is pleased to announce more than 50 wide-ranging internships open to Middlebury students in a variety of majors and interests. Through this internship program, opportunities will be available in NOAA labs and offices nationwide, working in fields such as applied ocean and atmospheric science, policy, and science communication. Each student’s summer activities will be overseen and mentored by a NOAA staff member.
Internships are in the natural and social sciences and last approximately 10 weeks. Start dates are flexible, but most internships begin in June and end in August. Interns will be selected on a competitive basis. While these are unpaid internships, the Center for Education in Action is committed to providing funding for up to three of these opportunities (current seniors are not eligible for funding but may still apply for the internships).

Want to learn Yiddish? Apply for the Steiner Summer Yiddish Program! Open to eighteen college students each summer, this seven-week program includes daily beginner or intermediate Yiddish language classes as well as Yiddish culture classes. The program is held at the Yiddish Book Center in Amherst, Massachusetts.
The Vermont Community Foundation has three full-time positions open. These positions include Accountant, Philanthropy Associate, and Special Projects Director. The Special Projects Director position involves thinking strategically about ways philanthropy can have an impact on Vermont’s future and building collaborative work with a variety of partners.
Successful applicants will:
- have great communication skills
- be comfortable and experienced in facilitating stakeholder discussions and promoting leadership initiatives
- have a high level of project management skills
- have a strong history of successfully driving initiatives

Strolling of the Heifers is teaming up with VT Technical College to present the 2013 Vermont Farm/Food Business Plan Competition. The competition “seeks to encourage business formation and growth throughout Vermont by helping business owners and prospective entrepreneurs develop viable business plans, gain public attention, and earn financial rewards.” College students may enter under the Student business category, with a first place prize of $4,000, second place $2,000, and runners-up $1,000. For eligibility, general information, and a timeline for contestants visit the contest website. The first deadline is February 5th, by which time contestants should register using the online form. Also on February 5th, contestants must attend a business prospectus workshop from 4pm-6pm (held at multiple locations across Vermont). Check it out! You might have the best plan.
The Urban Teacher Center is a four-year, alternative teacher preparation program that currently operates in Washington, DC and Baltimore, MD. UTC is offering applicants an opportunity to effect urban education reform via effective teaching. As part of the program, participants will experience an intensive year-long residency, followed by a three-year teaching commitment in a high-need urban elementary, middle or high school. Additionally, participants will also enroll in a free dual Masters of Education program directly applicable to the urban teacher position.
If you would like to apply for the UTC Chicago or Oakland, CA locations, you MUST apply by Friday, February 1st.

As a FoodCorps service member, participants will teach children about what healthy food is and where it comes from, build and tend school gardens, bring quality local food into public school cafeterias. FoodCorps is seeking up to 130 young adults to serve around the country for the 2013-2014 school year. The application is open through March 24th.

Even though volunteering does not initially provide you with cash on hand, it can still be incredibly valuable for your career path. Volunteering provides work experience, solid references in your preferred field, networking opportunities, and shows where your passion lies. Volunteer opportunities also leave you poised to take a job with the same organization should one become available.

Ever wonder what those exceedingly busy recruiters do with their leaning tower of resume’s? While a few applications do get interviews, some get ditched. Here’s a brief synopsis of why, but do check out the article.
1. You don’t meet the requirements.
This seems like an obvious one, but many prospective hires don’t pay enough attention to the job description when deciding what to include in their resume or distract from their legitimate qualifications with unnecessary details. Don’t do that.
2. You’re not a culture fit.
It’s OK – even advantageous – to let your personality show in your application. Many employers are not looking for a generic anybody to do their tedious grunt work. Try to show the ways in which you are their “type.”
3. You don’t pay attention to detail.
Again, this should go without saying. Employers can become frustrated with smaller details than you realize: font consistency, margins, to whom you’ve addressed your cover letter. Make sure you double-check and proof-read. It’ll get you past the trash can.

The Coalition for the International Criminal Court (CICC) is a network of over 2,500 civil society organizations from around the world, working together to establish a fair, effective and independent International Criminal Court (ICC). The ICC is the first permanent Court with the mandate to bring to justice individuals who commit the most serious violations of international humanitarian law, namely genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes. The CICC seeks a full-time Fellow for the Americas section of its International Secretariat, based in Lima, Peru.
The Fellow will provide assistance and support to the Coalition´s Americas Coordinator, working actively in CICC campaigns in the region, with the aim to promote ratification and implementation of the Rome Statute, engage civil society in the ICC process nationally and internationally, and increase awareness and support for international justice in the region. Sustainable Harvest’s Summer Fellowship Program hosts fellows at their offices around the world–either at their headquarters in Portland, Oregon, or in their origin offices in Lima, Peru; Oaxaca, Mexico; or Kigoma and Moshi, Tanzania. Fellows receive a stipend and work alongside staff on projects related to business communications, impact measurement, development funding, and other tasks that give them a broad understanding of their mission and practices as a social enterprise and an opportunity to develop professionally.
This article, Green Jobs for Recent Graduates: Make a Sustainable Impact, made an impact on me. I read it and couldn’t stop thinking that when you graduate from Middlebury College you feel armed to take on the world with all your newly acquired skills and competencies from 4-years of liberal arts inquiry and experiential learning. Yet, what our graduates are finding is that in some sectors–especially those that are emerging–the idea of an entry-point is not so obvious. So what our graduates need to do is be both creative and assertive. They need to re-define what the entry-point could look like for employers by being persuasive enough and confident enough to take on projects. They also need to be realistic about what skills are needed in these sectors; perhaps getting LEED certified would provide additional credentials in the green building sector or energy auditor training for the energy efficiency area. Why not approach a start-up firm or new energy efficiency company with the willingness to start lower on the totem-pole but exhibit the willingness to take on new training and rise through the ranks (sounds old fashion, right?).
Your liberal arts degree will not be put on a back-burner. Instead you will be using your skills in a new context–whether it’s in a classroom or working on green building design–your ability to identify and tackle problems critically, your ability to get diverse groups of people to work together, or your ability to synthesize, analyze and execute will always be put to the test in a world that is constantly pushing the boundaries of your comfort zone.

Students ending their first year in college will serve on their Williamstown support staff and may earn leadership opportunities. Students completing their sophomore year typically lead in New England. Juniors and seniors lead programs across the country and world-wide.
