Until February 15 the Middlebury College Libraries has trial access to Proquest’s House of Commons Parliamentary Papers (HCPP), a full-text searchable database with the working documents of government for all areas of social, political, economic, and foreign policy from the 18th century to the 21st.

ProQuest’s Environmental Science Collection – trial access

Middlebury College has temporary access to ProQuest’s Environmental Science Collection, with full-text from over 1,400 publications including scientific journals, conference proceedings, reports, books, and government publications. Find information pertaining to a variety of topics in the Environmental Sciences including:

Agriculture
Air pollution
Control technologies
Endangered species
Energy
Environmental design
Environmental education
Environmental law and policy
Environmental safety
Geophysical and climate change

Trial access to three American history databases

Until June 25th, you can investigate these databases, focusing on 19th and early 20th century American History:

The American West (archives drawn from the Western Americana collections at the Newberry Library, Chicago)

Everyday Life and Women in America, c.1800-1920 (archives from the Sallie Bingham Center for Women’s History & Culture, Duke University and the New York Public Library)

Slavery, Abolition and Social Justice (drawn from the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, Duke University, U.S. Supreme Court, British Library, and others)

Nineteenth Century Collections Online (trial access through April 30)

Nineteenth Century Collections Online (NCCO) is a full-text, searchable research collection of 19th century monographs, newspapers, manuscripts, photographs, maps, ephemera, and statistical data.

Currently, Middlebury College has access to two collections: British Politics and Society and European Literature, 1790-1840: The Curvey Collection.

Both collections can be searched together through the Nineteenth Century Collections Online website and through our New Trials page.

Ultimately, this research collections will grow as the following groups of archives are added:

Asia and the West: diplomacy and cultural exchange (ministerial and consular papers; foreign missions) (spring 2012)
British Theatre, Music and Literature: High and Popular Culture (spring 2012)
South Asia (spring 2013)
History of science (spring 2013)
History of photography (spring 2013)
19^th-century Americana (spring 2013)

Shun Bao Digital Archive (trial access extended through April 16)

Middlebury College is extending a trial to The Shen Bao Digital Archive (1872-1949), formerly transliterated as Shun Pao or Shen-pao (申報), the Shanghai News. Learn more about Shen Bao, published from April 30, 1872 to May 27, 1949 in Shanghai, China.

Trial access to South Asian historical archives (through April 30)

For the month of April, please visit the following East Asian historical archives databases. The Library is considering them through a collaboration with several Vermont colleges:

India Raj and Empire
Original manuscript material ranging from the foundation of the East India Company in 1615 to records of daily life in Agra, Bombay, Lahore, and Madras. Included are diaries, letters, maps, sketches and official and private papers. The collection is particularly strong for the 18th and 19th centuries.

Foreign Office Files for India, Pakistan and Afghanistan, 1947-1980
Three archival collections drawn from the British Foreign Office files on the countries of South Asia from shortly before Indian partition and independence up to 1980. The archival documents are divided into the following sections: (1) Independence, Partition and the Nehru Era, 1947-1964, (2) South Asian Conflicts and Independence for Bangladesh, 1965-1971 (3) Afghanistan and the Cold War, Emergency Rule in India, and the Resumption of Civilian Rule in Pakistan, 1972-1980.

Empire Online
Empire Online is an interactive digital collection exploring colonial history, politics, culture and society. The archive is designed specifically to encourage the use of primary sources in teaching and includes 1000s of images of unique primary material including maps, manuscripts, pamphlets, paintings, drawings and rare books spanning five centuries from a translation of Columbus’s 1492 voyage to the 21st century.

Although these three collections are available separately, they can be searched as a group using Archive Explorer.

Chinese language databases (trial through May 15)

Along with over ten liberal arts colleges, Middlebury has arranged to trial several Chinese language research databases.

Airiti Library for Chinese journals, dissertation, etc. (trial access through May 31)

Airitibooks Chinese eBooks (trial access through May 31)

CNKI Chinese Databases (trial access through May 31) Through CNKI (Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure) we have access to all China Academic Journals (CAJ) (1915 onward), dissertations (1984 onward), theses, proceedings, and newspapers.

Human Relations Area Files – trial access through April 30th

The Middlebury College community can now access the eHRAF World Cultures and eHRAF Archaeology databases, research databases for all aspects of cultural and social life and for comparative archaeological studiesIn the 1930s, behavioral scientists and cultural anthropologists at Yale University’s Institute of Human Relations developed a classification of cultural information by subject. HRAF grew out of these efforts. Today, HRAF is committed to developing dynamic, fully-indexed electronic collections on the World Wide Web.

Through April 5th, Middlebury College has access to two new publications about environmental and energy policy: ClimateWire and EnergyWire, both by Environment & Energy Publishing (E&E).

Environment & Energy Daily, E&E Daily (A daily news service focused on environmental and energy issues in Congress)
Greenwire (Daily stories energy and environmental policy)
Land Letter (A weekly natural resources report)
E&ENews PM (A late afternoon roundup providing coverage of policy news around the country and the world)
E&ETV (Featuring in-depth interviews and analysis with energy and environmental policy leaders)
