TESL/TEFL certificate program for Middlebury students

NOTE: An informational meeting about this program will be held Wednesday, March 2nd at 4:30pm, in Twilight 301
Flyers will also be available at the Education in Action fair on Monday February 28th.

Dates: June 13th -July 15th , 2011
Location: Santiago, Chile.
Cost: $3000 including tuition, materials, and lodging/meals in local homestay. ($2300 without homestay)
Primary Instructors: Dr. Shawna Shapiro (faculty in Writing and Linguistics programs) and Dr. Jeffrey Stevenson (Director for Schools Abroad in Mexico and Chile)
Description:
A TESL/TEFL certificate is one of the most widely recognized credentials for teaching English across the world. Although there are a number of certificate programs available, the quality of such programs can vary widely. This program is tailored specifically to the needs, interests, and backgrounds of Middlebury students—particularly those who are interested in teaching English to Spanish-speaking populations. The curriculum draws on participants’ own language learning experience, and also places strong emphasis on social justice, through partnership with organizations that work with underprivileged populations.

Our program includes a 15-hour teaching practicum, in which participants will observe, assist, and teach under the guidance of highly-experienced mentor teachers. Those completing the certificate may have the opportunity to pursue longer-term teaching internships in Santiago or other locations in Latin America. This program follows recommendations put forth by the TESOL association, and its graduates will be well-prepared to teach English in an effective and ethical manner.

For more information, or if you are unable to attend the information meeting on March 2nd (details above), please contact
Shawna Shapiro (sshapiro@middlebury.edu) or Jeffrey Stevenson (jstevens@middlebury.edu).
