Shared Shelf is Launched!

ARTstor has notified us that all of the Middlebury Visual Resources images have now been ingested into our Shared Shelf collection in ARTstor. There are 3,143 images in the collection (This is, to date, the largest Shared Shelf Collection in existence.) The collection is quickly growing as we add images for teaching your courses.

These images will turn up when you search all collections in ARTstor, or you can choose to search just the Middlebury VR collection.

There are lots of places you can go to find people at Middlebury engaged in social media, but most of these are the official content of campus Departments and Offices. We are putting together a new site to highlight the informal online activities of Middlebury faculty, students, and staff. There are a great number of blogging about your life experiences, putting together fun videos, showing off your photography, and organizing for causes, or just for fun with social media.

Interview with Toby Smith, a photographer who took our amazing Madagascar pictures!

Check out this interview with Toby Smith, a photographer that accompanied EIA on one of our Madagascar trips. He helped to get us amazing footage, as well as document illegal logging. EIA intends to use Toby’s pictures and video to prosecute those responsible for creating the international market outside of Madagascar.

Illegal Logging has Declined 25% in the Past Decade!

EIA’s Forest Campaign Outreach Coordinator, Anne Middleton, has a guest column in The High Point Enterprise! This informative article details how worldwide illegal logging has declined as much as 25 percent over the past decade, with reductions as high as 50 percent to 75 percent in key producer countries. The report emphasized the role the U.S. Lacey Act plays in motivating importers of wood to ensure their product comes from viable sources. This is great news, since EIA played a key role in helping pass the Lacey Act!

This photo was taken March 2001 in Nepal, India. It is a seizure of Chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) chemicals. CFCs are are man-made chemical compounds used as refrigerants, cleaning solvents, aerosol propellants, and blowing agents for foam packaging in many commercial applications. CFCs are harmful to our environment because they break down in the stratosphere, where the sun’s UV waves are more intense. The UV-induced breakdown releases free, highly reactive chlorine and bromine atoms from the CFCs. EIA has been working hard to eliminate the use of CFCs, as well as other harmful chemical substances.
