Last Chance — LIS Open Workshops Wind Down for the Summer

It’s not too late to join us for a workshop (in English!) before Language Schools begin. Visit go/lisworkshops to view the last of our advertised open sessions. Youll find a Drupal introduction that covers basic web site maintenance skills, as well as another opportunity to learn how to access and use Middlebury’s fabulous online learning resource that uses short videos to help you acquire new business and technology skills, including photography finesse.

Lynda’s recently added courses include such varied topics as “Managing Teams,” “Designing a Book,” and “Up and Running with Windows 8.” Watch a single video or work through an entire course, but be warned its addictive.

Please note that we do continue to offer “by request” group training during the summer months, staff and classroom space permitting; kindly send your request with details to helpdesk@middlebury.edu.

You’ll find Drupal introductions that cover basic web site maintenance skills, as well as work sessions where you can get help with specific questions about how to improve your departmental web site. We are also offering several opportunities to learn how to access and use — Middlebury’s fabulous online learning resource that uses short videos to help you acquire new business and technology skills.

Education & Training Team Rings in 2013 with New Membership

The Education & Training team started the new year by welcoming four new members: Jamie Carroll (HelpDesk/Service Requests), Jeff Lahaie (Central Systems & Network Services), Ian McBride (Web Development) and Cindy Peet (Enterprise Reporting). Brenda Ellis (Research & Instruction), our valued link to student information literacy efforts and more, continues to bring her expertise to the group and Pij Slater (HelpDesk/Service Requests) carries on as leader of the merry band, along with sponsor, Mary Backus.

We offer a round of thanks to the following outgoing members for their efforts in the group since its inception in 2010: Mack Roark, Andy Wentink and Kim Ehritt (College Advancement).

Orientation Checklist for LIS Staff

The Education and Training Team has developed a checklist for LIS supervisors to go over with new staff (although we think some not-so-new staff may appreciate this as well). You can find it on the LIS page under “About LIS.” We’ve incorporated input from the AD’s and manager’s group and it will change over time as we get more feedback. Our intention is that the supervisor (perhaps with help from other designated colleagues) will work through this checklist with new hires, explaining and answering questions as they go along. It is not meant to be a self-service learning tool, although new staff can use it to go back and explore topics more in-depth on their own. You’ll notice some entries have a link and some don’t. We only linked to things that weren’t already major links on our public LIS pages so new staff learn to navigate the LIS site as well as become familiar with major “go” shortcuts. We hope our new checklist will help supervisors get new staff off to a great start in LIS!
