First, a bit of background: PLOS was established in 2000 to provide high-quality peer-reviewed open-access (i.e. it doesn’t cost the reader anything – no subscription fees) online journals in the biological sciences. While most journals in the “hard” sciences rely on subscriptions from readers and publication fees from authors, PLOS relies solely on publication fees from authors.

For a modest annual fee, our membership with PLOS has enabled our faculty to publish articles in PLOS journals for a discounted publication fee. Please note this does NOT mean that PLOS will cease publication of its journals. PLOS Biology (the first PLOS journal), and the other PLOS journals will continue to be published, online, accessible to anyone, anywhere.

Sunday of course, was the Y-chromosome version of the two “family holidays”, namely, Fathers’ Day. So, after enjoying a pile of blueberry pancakes in bed (lovingly prepared by my daughter), complete with maple syrup which dripped off my fork and onto my t-shirt, followed by a few chores, I chose to spend part of the day on my own adventure before a planned evening of activities back with the Trailrunner family. For this weekend’s run, I chose a loop over the top of Mount Moosalamoo, including one section of trail I had never previously explored. To get to the trailhead, I drove up Rt. 125 towards the Snow Bowl, but took the right turn onto the Ripton-Goshen Road a short distance past beautiful downtown Ripton. A few miles down this well maintained dirt road, I took the right turn onto the road leading to the Moosalamoo Forest Service Campground. A few short weeks ago, I did a run from this same parking lot, but instead of the first bits of Spring greenery, I was treated to full summer foliage, replete with the first glimpses of roadside daisies, my favorite flower.

Arriving in the parking lot immediately before the campground loop I could see that the weather was getting a little bit gloomier, but short of an immediate downpour, I saw no reason not to enjoy the run! The first third of a mile or so meandered through the woods behind the campground, and joined an old lumber road for a short (and well marked) turn to the right, followed almost immediately by a left turn with a short steep descent down to the North Branch stream crossing bridge, the low point of the run.

Stream Crossing

From this point on, it was a relentless, but rarely steep uphill run for the better part of the next two miles. This particular climb features prominently in The Moosalamoo Ultra, a MUCH longer trail run which I featured in this blog last year. The trail angled along the side of Mt. Moosalamoo for most of the way, and the low ground cover combined with the mature hardwood forest accentuated the sloped appearance.

Sidehill Running

At the two mile mark, the road splits, with the right turn constituting the long descent of the Oak Ridge Trail, and the left turn heading towards the Moosalamoo Summit. About a quarter mile from the summit, my head turned ever-so-slightly and out of the corner of my eye, I spotted a large and rather bold creature who burst out of the trees and over the grass, edging its way towards me. Holy mother of god! What is it? No, the words that were being screamed inside the crowded confines of my busy mind were not ones I would chose to print. So much for peace and quiet, right? Anyway, I turned and strained my eyes (I leave my glasses behind on runs) to confirm the status and stature of the intruder. A squirrel? A stray dog? Nope! It was a fully grown bear, coming rapidly towards me. I have seen bears a handful of times in my life, but this one did not turn and run away as all the others had – it was coming right at me.

Anyway! I wanted to just watch her (I am guessing it was a she/sow guarding cubs), and even briefly reached for my camera until I realized she was coming at me, fast! I made a noise and waved my arms on purpose to see what would happen. Death wish? I don’t think so. She stopped maybe 10 yards away and probably not interested in eating me. Right? As she reared on her hind legs, I figured it was time to get out of there, so I backed off slowly, facing the bear, shouting and waving my arms, and when I disappeared over a ridge a minute later, I resumed my run, admittedly at a much faster pace.

Reaching the first of the twin peaks a few minutes later, I warned a family out for an afternoon hike to make plenty of noise on their descent. I offered an alternate route which bypassed the bear-infested trail, but they decided, probably correctly, that they would be more likely to come to harm getting lost in the woods than they would meeting up with a bear. I haven’t heard of any missing or eaten persons, so I presume they got out just fine. In addition to a few minutes of good conversation, I came across another treat – there, lying in the trail, was a live Luna Moth! I had never seen one of these graceful behemoths of the insect world before, and didn’t even know that they were native to Vermont! Entymologists claim that they are actually pretty common, so I wonder why they are so shy?

Luna Moth

Moving from the first summit, to the second summit which actually has better views, and after a short steep descent, I came to the trail which would complete my loop, the left turn onto the Keewaydin Trail. This trail, appearing on most of the maps of the region, is one which I had never hiked or run on previously, but looked like a convenient means of returning to my car in a loop run, rather than a simple “out and back” on the same trail. While the Keewaydin trail was very well marked, it had the wear more characteristic of a herd path or hunter’s trail, rather than a maintained trail. In some places, the trail was covered in soft spongy moss – a sure sign that it is almost never traveled on! While it was fine for hiking, as long as you don’t mind wet feet, it was very slow going from my runner’s perspective. Nonetheless, it is always fun going through new terrain. After about 2 miles of descent, I came to the road connecting the Moosalamoo campground with the Voter Brook overlook, and took a left turn for the easy run down the dirt road, returning to my car in what was now a drizzly afternoon. A few soggy campers huddled around smoky fires, but the campground was mostly empty.

This loop would make for a fun half day hike for most hikers, and took considerably less than that as a trail run, although the Keewaydin Trail section wasn’t great for runners. The run was only about 5 and a half miles, but did have close to 1200 vertical feet of climbing and descent. This was definitely one of the most exciting runs I have been on in a long time!

Present: Mary Backus, Terry Simpkins, Rebekah Irwin, Chris Norris, Jim Stuart, David Ludwig, Mike Roy and Doreen Bernier

Brief updates:

Proposed Joy Pile and Kellam Ayres, respectively, as writers for the Language Schools and Bread Loaf end-of-summer reports, pending confirmation with them. Terry will confirm with Joy and Mary will confirm with Kellam.

Mike proposed that the ADs hold the 9:00-10:00 on Thursdays to create a space in the calendar to hold additional ad hoc directors’ meetings. Doreen will send a calendar invite.

Mary asked Mike to speak with the Michael Geisler about closing the library on July 4th.

Jim asked if the Service Request Workgroup could assist with testing Eduroam. Eduroam began in Europe, and allows visiting scholars, etc., to log in at participating institutions world-wide using only their local credentials. Currently Eduroam is enabled in Voter and in Lib125 for testing purposes. Jim will touch base with Lisa Terrier to request her workgroups assistance. Chris requested more information about security issues. Terry suggested that Joy Pile could help identify Language School faculty who might be interested in participating.

We discussed planning for the Middfiles production cutover. Jim and his group proposed cutover dates of June 15-16, which would mean limited access to Middfiles for approximately 4 hours (during which Middfiles would be read-only). Because of the aggressive timeframe for this project, the directors requested that Jim distribute a draft change management document for their review. There are concerns about how this will affect Language Schools and certain Banner processes that write to Middfiles automatically. David and Jim will discuss further, and the directors also thought this should be discussed with John Stokes (Operations Director for LS). This would also have an impact on lab setups. There was strong sentiment that this timetable may be too aggressive and that it might be better to wait until after LS to implement. [6/17 update: The cutover is now likely to occur at the end of the summer after Language Schools].

The ADs discussed some of the more pressing office space recommendations prepared by the Space Team. In the Space Team proposal, the new hire for Media Services would be temporarily located at the desk behind the circulation desk in front of Doreen’s office. This is approved as a short term solution, but it would be preferred if all media staff worked in the same area. Joseph will place necessary requests with Facilities Services to better prepare the area as a workspace. Additionally:

approved a move of Joseph from his current location in the 135 suite to Special Collections;

approved new librarian hire going to DFL 207.

In addition to preferring to keep Media Services staff together if possible, we also expressed a desire to keep the Information Security staff in proximity to one another. The Directors agreed to provide the Space Team with a list of desiderata regarding staff locations (these would be general requirements or wish lists, not specific room assignments; e.g., workgroup A needs quiet space to work, staff members B & C could double up in offices if necessary, etc.). We will invite Joseph to meet with the ADs on June 20th for more discussion.

All area, workgroup and team goals are due at the beginning of July. Mike has asked the directors to draft goals for themselves. They are listed below with the AD who will act as lead.

Policy – (Chris Norris)
Internal Communication (Terry Simpkins)
Prioritization (Mike Roy)
Team Reassessment (Mike Roy)
Professional Development (Mike Roy)

Next week’s Directors’ meeting is canceled since several members will be traveling. We have an retreat scheduled for June 21. We will also try to reschedule that since several members will be out.

Agenda for June 20th

Goals preview

Budget

Cloud Strategy

Office Space

Communications TF recommendations

Thanks for reading,
Terry & Doreen

Next-gen pioneer and Middlebury employee Meghan Mason launches crowd-funding campaign to collect stories about the barriers low-income students face in entering higher education.

WASHINGTON, DC – This August, The Millennial Trains Project (MTP), a Washington, DC based organization, will host the nation’s first crowd-funded, transcontinental train journey to empower Millennials to advance innovative projects in ten localities across the U.S. A diverse group of pioneering Millennials (age 18-34) have proposed creative projects and launched crowdfunding campaigns to secure their spot on the journey that will travel from San Francisco, CA to Washington, DC. The train itself, a caravan of refurbished mid-20th century train cars, will serve as a mobile innovation lab, campus, and dormitory.

Meghan Mason, Coordinator of International Programs and Off-Campus Study at Middlebury College, is among those vying for a spot on the train. To get on board, Meghan must reach a $5,000 fundraising goal in support of her project by July 1st. Meghan, who says she was lucky enough to find a way to pay for college, has applied to The Millennial Trains Project with the goal of collecting real stories from people about the hurdles they face in pursuing higher education.

The goal of Meghan’s project, which she will advance across the localities where MTP’s train stops, is to add a human face to the numbers commonly cited on the issue of sending more students to college. Her project “will make the broad statistics that much more real and relatable to hear about the triumphs, tribulations and everyday lives of the people I’ll meet on this journey.” She will update a blog during each day of the journey, and upon the trip’s end, write an article so administrators and academics can understand the issue better.

“Meghan’s project exemplifies the sort of exploration, shared discovery, and learning that MTP is designed to support,” said Patrick Dowd, the Millennial Trains Project’s 26 year-old founder and CEO. “MTP is a real-world platform the next generation to explore their personal, professional, and creative frontiers on a national scale — and to better understand our country in the process.”

Anyone age 18-34 is eligible to apply for the Millennial Trains Project’s inaugural journey, which will travel from San Francisco, CA to Washington, DC this August 8-17. The deadline for fundraising to get on board is July 1st. To learn more about the Millennial Trains Project, visit http://millennialtrain.co/; to contribute to the crowdfunding campaigns of next-gen pioneers vying to get on board, visit http://crowdhitch.millennialtrain.co/.

Recently, we experienced a customer who was frustrated because they couldn’t delete unwanted apps from their iPad. We have also had some customers come in who could not get the App they just purchased to work correctly. Here are some good tips and simple fix-it procedures for working with Apps.

One of the first things you should remember to follow up on is to check the iOS requirements of the Apps you want to purchase or did purchase and the App is having issues. You can find these at the Apps Store by searching store for the App and selecting it. You will find the requirements underneath description or Information of App (shown in picture blow). With some Apps, you may have to click on more info.

Then you can view the iOS version of your iPad by going to Settings and looking in General, then About where you will find version in the middle of list. This will let you know whether the App you are interested or already purchased is compatible with the version you have. At this point, you should try to see if there are software updates available, which is also in Setting in General then Software Update. You should always update your software before you purchase new Apps.

To remove an App you don’t want or one that is giving you trouble and you want to reinstall it simply find the App on your iPad Screen and tap and hold until it starts to wiggle or jiggle (“Wiggle” mode Fun Tip below) . You will notice an x in the upper corner(see photo at left) which you can tap to delete this App. If you decide after tapping x that you want to stop deleting the App, press the Home Screen button on the iPad whihc will cancel the delete.

After you have deleted this App from your Screen, you can re-install it by going to the App Store on your iPad. If you purchased this App, you can tap Purchased to find it or search App Store. Then tap install to re-install it.

You now can open the newly re-installed App to see if all the issues you were experiencing are gone.

You can go the link below if you are still experiencing issues.

Apple Support for iPad Apps

Fun tip- Rearranging Apps:

You can rearrange the Apps on a page or from page to page while they are in this “Wiggle” mode by dragging them around. You can organize them by page like all Game Apps on one page, Apps for Work on another, Apps for travel on another, etc.

The topic of the institute, Renewing the Ancient Quarrel: Plato, Hegel, and Adorno, refers to what Plato called “the quarrel between philosophy and poetry” (Republic X). Participants take part in intensive seminars while working on their own projects about the relation between philosophy and art in these three thinkers. The institute funds travel, housing, and food for all participants.
