				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Dear Colleagues,</p>
<p>Middlebury may  nominate two members of the faculty for the annual competition for Summer Stipends sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities. Each stipend  provides $6,000 for two consecutive months of full-time research and writing on  a humanities project, “advanced research that is of value to humanities  scholars, general audiences, or both.” (See eligibility information below).</p>

<p>If you would like to  be considered for a College nomination, please send a description of your proposed project and a current C.V. to me (with cc to Lynn Dunton) by email  by <strong>Friday, July </strong><span style="color: #0000ff"><span style="font-size: x-small"><span style="color: #000000;font-size: small"><strong>2</strong><span style="color: #0000ff;font-size: x-small"><strong><span style="color: #000000;font-size: small">9</span></strong></span></span></span></span><strong>.</strong></p>

<p>You should consult  the NEH summer stipend guidelines and prepare a proposal of an appropriate  length and format to be forwarded to NEH in the event that you are selected as a  nominee. A selection panel will then select the College&#8217;s two nominees. The nominees must, in turn, submit their final applications electronically to NEH  before <strong>September 29</strong><span style="color: #0000ff;font-size: x-small"><strong><span style="color: #000000;font-size: small"></span></strong></span><strong>.</strong></p>

<p>The website includes  a section of Frequently Asked Questions and sample proposals that you may review.</p>

<p>Feel free to contact Franci Farnsworth at the Sponsored Research Office to see copies of successful NEH Summer Stipend proposals or for other assistance.</p>
<p><span style="font-size: small"> <strong> </strong></span></p>
<p><strong>Eligibility:</strong></p>
<p>Applicants must be U.S. citizens, or foreign nationals who have lived continuously in the U.S. for three years prior to the October 1 deadline.</p>
<p><strong>Stipend recipients  may not have held major fellowships or grants during or since  the</strong> <strong>2008-2009  academic year.</strong> (College funded leaves are not considered major grants for  these purposes nor are other summer research grants.)  Grants may not be used to  support work toward a degree, but one need not hold an advanced degree to apply. Recipients must devote themselves full time to their projects for the  two months of the fellowship.</p>
<p>Applicants meeting  any of the following criteria do not have to be nominated by the College and may  apply directly to NEH:  part-time faculty or faculty with appointments  terminating by the summer of 2012 <span style="text-decoration: underline">or</span> emeritus faculty <span style="text-decoration: underline">or </span>non-faculty staff members who will not be teaching during the  2011-2012 academic year.  Contact NEH to verify your eligibility to apply  directly (without college nomination).</p>
