Every year, we take the Shabbat before finals to celebrate the seniors for everything they have done at Hillel and beyond! We’ll be reminiscing, tearing-up, and maybe poking a little fun too. Don’t miss the chance to toast (and roast) the seniors

Yom Ha’atzmaut

This Tuesday, we will be celebrating Yom Ha’atzma’ut, Israeli Independence Day. Yahooooo! (I mean Mazal Tov). We will be celebrating with food (falafel!) and Israel dance (Carllee James). Take a break from reading day to have some fun. The celebration will take place Tuesday, May 10th, at 1:30 pm outside of Hillel.

Join Uri L’Tzedek Summer Fellowship, a 6-week program, from June 27th-August 5th, that provides fellows a unique opportunity to work with Uri L’Tzedek’s staff and board to experience firsthand how to create an effective non-profit organization, gain exposure to communal Jewish issues, effect change through service projects and learn Torah, social justice philosophy, and community organizing models. 1. Shabbat

Services will begin this week at 6pm, but Hillel will open at 5:45. Dinner will follow.

2. Academic Forum- On Wednesday April 20^th(Today)at 7:30 in Bi-Hall 220, Professor Nathan Devir will be giving a lecture titled “Judaic Cultural Variables: Convergence or Divergence ” It should be a great lecture and we hope to see you all there.

2.5 Pesach- Hillel is open during select lunch and dinner hours with kosher for Passover food as well as a kitchen in which you can prepare kosher for Passover food. Please email Zach Fenster for more information

3. Elections- We are holding elections for board positions on Friday May 6^th, before services (time to be announced). Serving on the board is a great way to get more involved with Hillel and a chance for you to organize our great events. We have a lot of open spots this year (the full list is below). If you are interested, please start putting together a statement of intent for your desired position explaining why you want to hold the associated position. More information as well as more complete descriptions will follow.

The positions are as follow:

Social chair-Help to organize Hillel’s two major parties as well as Hillel Hangout.

Rituals chair- Organize weekly Shabbat services. Work with Rabbi Ira to organize the religious aspects of other holidays (especially the high holidays).

Treasurer (You need to the full year to apply)- Organize and maintain Hillel’s Finances. Email Steve for more information about what this entails.

Secretary- Help with organizing and publicity. Part of the responsibilities Take notes at meetings,

Academic- You organize academic events. Of note this year has been the academic forum speakers, and in the past have included bringing in outside speakers and films.

Meals chair- Organize Shabbat meals weekly. Your are responsible for making sure that there are meals every

4. Jewish Speed Dating (and relay for life fundraiser). This Saturday from 9-11.

“The Politics of Jewish Historiography: How to Construct a Usable Past.”

Michael Brenner is Professor of Jewish History and Culture at the University of Munich (Germany). He taught previously at Indiana University and Brandeis University and was visiting professor at the universities of Stanford, Berkeley, Johns Hopkins, Budapest, Haifa, Paris, and Lucerne. He is the International Vice-President of the Leo Baeck Institute and a member of the Bavarian Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Among his book publications are A Short History of The Jews (Princeton UP 2010, German 2008, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish and Turkish translations), Prophets of the Past: Interpreters of Jewish History (Princeton UP 2010, German 2006), Zionism: A Brief History (2003, German 2002, Italian and Korean translations), The Renaissance of Jewish Culture in Weimar Germany (1996, German and Hebrew translations), and After the Holocaust: Rebuilding Jewish Lives in Postwar Germany (1997, German 1995). He is co-author of the four-volume German-Jewish History in Modern Times (1996-98).

Debbie Friedman Memorial Service

This coming Friday with be the shloshim (30 days) since Debbie Friedman passed away.
As a way to honor her and her music, Ohavi Zedek (OZ) Synagogue in Burlington will have a Friday night service using Debbie’s music almost exclusively.

Since so many of you grew up on this music you might want to join us.
It will be nice to have a Middlebury College group present.

Cool Relay for Life type volunteer opportunity

It is called Hope on the Slopes and is basically a Relay help on a downhill ski slope. Teams ski and snowboard all day to show the strength and endurance you need to beat cancer. We electronically track their vertical and total distances and intersperse the skiing with theme hours, games, entertainment and speakers. The event will be held March 12 from 9am-8pm at Bolton Valley Ski Resort in Bolton, about a 1.25 hour drive from lovely Middlebury (hotel deals are available if you want). Birthright Israel Registration

Dear Middlbury Hillelites,

We hope you’re enjoying a wonderful February Break! We thought we could let you know of the fast approaching registration date for Birthright Israel trips this summer.

Are you interested in traveling to Israel with all of your friends… for FREE?? If you’re Jewish, between ages 18-26, and have never been on a peer-group trip to Israel, you qualify for a FREE 10 day trip to Israel with the Birthright program. Registration is easy, so grab your friends and check out what Birthright has to offer at www.freeisraeltrip.org.

The Campus Hillel Brithright program offers trips in May, June, and August of 2011, and registration is approaching quickly!

For previous applicants, registration opens at 12:00 noon eastern time on Monday, February 14.

Alternative Spring Break

During Spring Break, Hillel will be hosting an alternative Spring Break Trip at the Kayam Farm. Kayam is a Jewish educational farm in Maryland, and we’ll spend a few days farming as well as hiking, canoeing, and biking in the Chesapeake Bay Area. If you haven’t yet made plans for Spring Break, these trips are always a blast and a meaningful way to spend a week off. Currently, there are a few spots remaining on the trip. For more information and to figure out how to secure your spot, email Sean Maye.

Hebrew House?

Students, faculty, and the Hebrew Department have submitted a proposal for a Hebrew Language House for next year! We are looking for students interested in living there that have a background in Hebrew. Please email Hannah Elkin (helkin@middlebury.edu) or Steven Dunmire (sdunmire@middlebury.edu) if you’re interested. This an exciting development for Hebrew at Middlebury and we’d love to hear from you!

Have you been on Birthright? Want to go again?

The Birthright Israel Revisited Fellows program is a post birthright opportunity for 2-3 leaders on your campus created by Boston’s own Peter Bendetson( a wonderful friend of Hillel) with Taglit Birthright Israel and the Israeli government. They are looking for freshman, sophomores or juniors who have had a birthright experience and who have the potential to serve in leadership positions on your campus. The program is heavily subsidized with a cost per participant of $500 (which may be waived if there are pressing circumstances). Interested? Email me for more information.

1. Shabbat

It’s a themed Shabbat!!!! This week’s theme: Prom. Come fifteen minutes early (5:15) to drink punch and have your prom picture taken. You can even nominate prom king or queen (email Leah) Be sure to wear your favorite prom outfit!

As normal, services start at 5:30, Dinner at 6:30.

2. Community Supper

Friday in two weeks (the 21^st), the Religious Life Council is hosting community supper – a restaurant style meal in town open to all residents of Addison County. As a member of the RLC, Hillel is responsible for one shift: 3:30-5:30 (the food preparation shift).Since we are responsible for bringing students, please RSVP if you are planning on attending (we need as many students as possible). It’s a lot of fun and a great way to meet members of the greater Addison Country community.

3. Tu Bishvat is Wednesday the 19^th.– Be on the look out for information about a Seder or related text study next week.
