Many students forget- or are just too lazy- to back up their work. When they come in with failed hard drives or computers in need of repair, they have no way to access their files. We wanted to remind students how to put the Middfiles shortcut in the dock. This makes for a fast and easy way to save works-in-progress or valuable files in case of future computer emergencies.
1. Click on the link below to connect to the server.
2.Type smb://middfiles.middlebury.edu/middfiles into the server address box.
3. When the Middfiles folder is up and you can see the title as Middfiles on the Middfiles folder
4. Drag the icon next to that title to your dock next to (but not in) the trash icon in your dock.
Now you are ready take on the task of backing up starting with just a click on the icon in your dock!
Often times, taking the time to move your hand from the keyboard over to the mouse or down to scroll with the trackpad can make a project seem to take longer than it should. Here are some more Keyboard Shortcuts that can make your life easier while working on your Mac.
You can view all the windows you have open or hide them by clicking F11. Then you can go to previous open window Command-Shift-Accent (‘) or go to next open window with Command-Accent (‘).
Command-Shift-Control-3 lets you Capture a screen to clipboard or Command-Shift-Control-4 to Capture a selection to clipboard and then Command-V to paste clipboard content at the insertion point (where cursor is).
If you use Voiceover, here are some good shortcuts:
Command-F5 or FN-Command-F5 to Turn Voiceover on or off. Option-Control-F7or Fn-Option-Control-F7 to Display Voiceover Menu.
If you are working in a program such as Adobe Photoshop, you can use Command-Option-T to Show or Hide Toolbar.
Some of the more often used and favorite shortcuts that I use include:
Command-M to Minimize a window or Command-Option-M to Minimize all windows.
To Print Screen, I use Command-P.
Command-Colon(:) lets you Display the Spelling Window and Command-Semicolon(;) helps you Find Misspelled Words in the document.
I hope these shortcuts are very useful and aid you in your endeavor of a more fluid approach to working with your Mac. I am including a link to even more Mac shortcuts below.
We have heard, “Wow, I did not know you repaired Mac’s here” countless times by Staff, Faculty and Students alike! We would like to introduce our Apple Authorized Tech to you, Ark Lemal, pictured above at his work station in the College Bookstore. He is a local self-employed Apple Licensed Technician who works through our Middlebury Apple Campus Store directly in the store at the Apple Desk area Monday’s, Wednesday’s and Friday’s in the afternoon providing immediate on-site repairs for 5 years now. He has 20 years of experience working with Mac’s repairing them and he knows the ins and outs of the Apple World by keeping on top of all Apple Service training and Mac updates.
On-site repairs mean that he works on them right here in the Bookstore with an average of about 3 to 4 days turn around time for diagnosing the problem, getting the parts in and installing/replacing, then fixing the Mac. If you were to call or contact Apple regarding any problem, they would either suggest you go to the nearest “Genius Bar” which is in Albany, NY or send the machine to them. This requires waiting for them to send the shipping box to you, you sending your Mac far away to be diagnosed and fixed before it is finally sent back, possibly with an empty Hard Drive (there goes all your work, photos, programs and saved data) to arrive back with a week or a two-week turn around time.
As you can imagine, having the Apple Authorized Tech right here on Campus in the College Bookstore is much less stressful for Faculty, Staff and Students. The time frame alone is better since most people cannot live without their computer for more than a few days. Having to deal with an empty Mac after all that wait would send most individuals over the edge then, from loosing all their saved data.
Ark always asks the Mac owner up front if they have backed up their computer, making sure they do not loose any of their data before doing anything that would require loosing it. He offers suggestions and generally tries to save money for the owner in any way he can.
So the next time you have an issue with your Mac, go to the Apple Desk in the College Bookstore.

The iPad is a light-weight alternative to bringing your Mac to class. You can take notes, check email, write your papers and give a presentation by hooking up directly to overhead projectors with them. We have many selections including the iPad Mini which was the hottest new item for the 2012 Year.
Look for more student appreciation events in the future.
News for our Apple Authorized Tech, Ark Lemal-
We are seeing many laptops coming in with water and/or “sticky substance” damage which could have been prevented by purchasing a keyboard cover to help reduce the possibility of liquid getting at your keyboard when cramming for finals.
Ark Lemal’s hours will remain Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoons this semester.

Come in and take a look at just how great this new addition to the iPad family really is. We have both the White iPad Mini, which has the Silver aluminum back and the Black iPad Mini, which has the charcoal-gray Slate back. Both enclosures are created from a solid block of aluminum for a sleek and durable finish. These iPad Mini’s weigh less, and are only 3/4 of the size of its larger relative, but it has all the same features as the iPad 3. You can read a book, listen to your music, write a novel, take pictures and record videos, email or video talk with FaceTime and all the other incredibly amazing things you can do with the larger version.
Check them out- they will make a great holiday gift!
