We won’t be offering LISterine workshops for the remainder of the summer, but don’t let that prevent you from freshening your professional perspective. Take a few moments to learn about Phishing, Twitter, online photo sharing and more by watching videos created by Common Craft. They’re short, engaging and relevant to our work.

Our next LISterine workshop is scheduled for September 17 at 12:30. Alex Chapin will present on “capture”: audio recording, podcasting and screencasting. An invitation will go out closer to the date.

Drupal is a web-based Content Management System, similar to the software that our current website runs on, but also different in many ways. In this session, Ian McBride will discuss the things that makes Drupal unique, why we chose Drupal as a platform for our new site, and look at some examples of the ways we can extend Drupal to improve our website. We’ll spend some time looking at an extension developed by Amherst College, the only other school running its entire web presence on Drupal, named Monster Menus which we’ll be using as part of the core functionality of our site.

This session requires no technical knowledge of our website, content management systems, or programming, but is a great opportunity for you to ask questions on those topics.

Over the last few years, the online community has recognized the potential of “mashing up” maps and multimedia content. Numerous popular applications, including Mapquest, Google Earth, CNN’s Perceptive Pixel, and the iPhone use maps to arrange and present data in exciting formats that often trump the ubiquitous Powerpoint slideshow or Excel spreadsheet. Imagine being able to explore recordings of interviews or images of monuments by flying across a landscape showing the context of your work – or demonstrate changing demographics by watching individual census tracts shift year by year. In this workshop, Digital Media Tutors and LIS-GIS Team members Jack Cuneo and Jue Yang will show us what mashups are and how presentations can be enhanced with them.
