The Facebook Insights and ShareThis data are for the period November 1-30, 2012. The Twitter stats are for the period September 17 – December 17, 2012.

756 unique people shared stories about our page. These stories include liking our Page, posting to our Page’s Wall, liking, commenting on or sharing one of our Page posts, answering a Question we posted, RSVPing to one of our events, mentioning our Page, phototagging our Page or checking in at our Place.
32097 unique people saw one of the items shared in that way.
57243 unique people saw content associated with our Page.

ShareThis is a service that tracks the clicks on the sharing buttons on our website. These buttons are shown on news postings, which are primarily found in the News Room, Arts, Sustainability, and Athletics sections of the site. On November 1, we moved these buttons from the bottom of the news posting into the right hand sidebar in an attempt to increase their visibility. For comparison, we include the numbers from October, 2012 to see if this had any effect, though because we had a very high-profile story in October (the visit of the Dalai Lama), we may not be able to get meaningful information from this sample.

It’s not a popularity contest, but… We’re liked! Since we got ourselves on Facebook last spring, nearly 100 students, faculty, staff, organizations and colleagues have ‘liked’ our page. (More are always welcome! Find us at Middlebury College LIS.)

If you’ve ‘liked’ us all along, you’ve noticed that we’ve been posting a little more frequently lately. Our goal is to share pertinent news and tips, and the fall semester always brings lots of change. It’s helpful to hear from our readers, so please ‘like’ or ‘comment’ on posts that strike your fancy.

We’ve been asked by a few LIS staff members how to get info posted to the page. The easiest way is to send an email to our current social media community managers: Steve Bertolino, Jess Isler, and Carrie Macfarlane. They’ll either post the info right away, or decide whether/when to post later. (We have a calendar; as we mentioned last spring, we’re trying not to over-post!) Other liaisons know that they can add their suggestions to our calendar directly.

Introducing the Middlebury College LIS Facebook Page!

We invite you to visit the new LIS Facebook Page, and if you have a Facebook account, please “Like” the Page!:

For the past few weeks the Reference & Instruction workgroup has taken the lead on posting content to this Page. Today we write to invite Fans and feedback from all of LIS (and beyond), and explain how you may help us make this page a vibrant and vital part of our online presence.

Who is this for/What is going to appear on the Page?:

We hope to focus the Page primarily toward students, but we also think the content and information shared there will be of interest to Staff and Faculty. We received feedback from SLAC (Student LIS Advisory Committee) that content postings to the Page should not be too frequent.

How will things be added?/I’d like to share something!:

If you have content you’d like to have featured on the LIS Facebook Page, get in touch with the social media community managers, Jess Isler and Joy Pile.

Facebook Integration for Drupal

A few months ago, we added support for Meta Tags on Drupal nodes, which gave you access to add an optional description and list of keywords to news stories, profiles, or other content types on the site. This feature was mainly added because when you link to a page in Facebook their site will try to fetch a description for that link and, if you don’t supply one in the meta description field, it will guess. It’s not very good at guessing.

We’ve now extended this in three important ways:

You can now add meta tags to pages.
You can add Facebook Open Graph tags.
You can add a Facebook “Like” button, which uses the Open Graph tags to give you information about the people visiting and sharing your site.

Adding Open Graph tags

Log in.
Click on Settings in the Edit Console.
In the middle of the page, expand the Meta Tags section.
Enter the appropriate values for the page.
Save the page.

Adding a Like Button

Log in.
Click Add in the Edit Console.
Select Facebook Like Button from the list of options.
Enter the URL of the page to use for the Like button.
Click Save.

Why you would do this

When somebody links to your page in Facebook, or when they click a Like button you have put on the page, Facebook makes a request to our website to see what the page is about. If you don’t have any Open Graph tags on the page, Facebook will try to guess what the page represents, taking its title, description, and often an image from content it finds on the page. Using Open Graph tags, you can help Facebook by removing the guess work.

You’ll also see that there is a tag to add a Facebook Admin ID. You can put a single Facebook user ID in that field, or a comma-separated list of multiple user IDs and those people will be able to use Facebook Insights to get reports on pages shared within your site. You’ll want to read over the documentation on Facebook Insights.

Where to add Open Graph tags

You don’t need to add Open Graph tags to every page on your site. You’ll probably want your site’s home page to have them as well as pages that you link to on your own Facebook account or page. For example, it would be good to have the tags on the Economics Department homepage, or a page describing a single event hosted by that department, but not on the distribution requirements page.

Where to add Like Buttons

You probably only need one Like button for your site. Using the Economics Department example above, they could add a Like button to the left column below the site navigation, which will then appear on every page within their site, just like the address information in that area does. But the URL for that button would always be the Economics Department homepage because that’s the value they would enter when creating the button. This way, even if someone is viewing the requirements page and clicks the button, their Facebook feed would still say “[Person] like Economics at Middlebury” with a description, title, and possibly image based off the Open Graph tags set on the department homepage.

Don’t worry if this is a lot of new and confusing information! I’m still trying to figure out how best to use these features on our site. There are lots of places you can go to find people at Middlebury engaged in social media, but most of these are the official content of campus Departments and Offices. We are putting together a new site to highlight the informal online activities of Middlebury faculty, students, and staff. There are a great number of blogging about your life experiences, putting together fun videos, showing off your photography, and organizing for causes, or just for fun with social media.

Send anything you think other people would be interested in seeing to website@middlebury.edu, or feel free to add it to the comment here! Expect to see another post here soon letting you know where to go to see what your peers are up to!
