In case you ever wondered what it costs to charge your iPad…

Some have asked, “Is it really cost effective for me to be reading documents on an iPad with a back-lit screen instead of printing them out?”. Based on this article, it is worth literally every penny.

For $1.36 for a year, when charging an iPad every other day, you can read a lot of papers! That amount of money would print 27.2 single sided sheets at the current printing costs on campus. Food for thought, don’t you think?

The study was only done using iPads but it would be safe to assume that the savings are similar with other tablets.

Every month I get a report about printing statistics from Papercut, the system we use to manage our printers. One of the things Papercut measures is how many pages did not get printed, and how much that reduced our carbon footprint. For January, nearly 10,000 jobs amounting to over 16,000 pages were not printed, saving 85.3 KG of carbon.

Good news! You can print from your laptop!

If the document you need to print is in Word, Excel, or PDF format, you can upload it from your laptop or desktop to a print queue via a web interface and then release it from the release stations, eliminating the step of having to print it from a library or lab computer.
Here’s how!
To print from your laptop when on the campus network:
Connect to http://go.middlebury.edu/papercut
Logon with your Middlebury [email] username/password
From the lefthand menu, select “Web Print”
Click on “Submit a Job >>”
Select a printer from the list
Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on “2. Print Options and Account Selection”
Specify number of copies, if you’d like
Click on “3. Upload Document”
Click on “Browse” to select the document on your computer that you wish to have printed
Click on “Upload & Complete”

Print Management: Coming soon!

A group of folks from LIS and the rest of the College have been meeting to develop a plan for rolling out print management to campus this Spring. The system, which uses PaperCut to manage print jobs, initially will require people wanting to print to release their print jobs via a control panel. In the Fall we intend to begin issuing print quotas. After a quota has been reached, the person would need to pay for their print outs using a credit card. As the project moves forward, we’ll post more information.

This week we’ll be running a test print release station at circulation in the main library; come by and try it out!
