Update: collection rearrangement in Davis Family Library

The book collections on the Main and Lower Levels of Davis Family Library have been rearranged in order to create room for the Music Library collections that will be moving later this month.  Updated paper copies of the building guide are available at the Circulation and Info Desks, and you may see updated plans online at go/davismap

New compact shelving was installed in the SE corner of the lower level, and all of the books in the “stacks” (aka general collection shelves) were shifted toward Z.   Therefor, if you’re used to finding your favorite PQ books in a specific spot, to find them now, keep following the alphabet toward Z until you run into them.

The Vermont Collection was moved to the middle of the lower level, as were the Arabic, Chinese, and Japanese Collections.   The VHS collection was moved to open shelves in the center of the Main Lvl just east of the Government Documents.


Music Library To Be Relocated To Davis

Last Saturday, the Middlebury Board of Trustees approved a project to relocate the Music Library from the Mahaney Center for the Arts (MCFA) into the Davis Family Library, moving the History of Art and Architecture Department into the vacated music library space.  This project is scheduled to begin next June, with completion hopefully by September.

Annual Classics Department Reading: The Aeneid

Each year, students and faculty in the Classics Department host a reading of a complete work from antiquity, outside on the Davis Family Library front steps. Anyone is welcome to stop by and listen!

The Latin epic about the destruction of one civilization and the founding of another, Vergil’s Aeneid recounts the wanderings of the hero Aeneas from the ruins of Troy to the shores of Italy, and describes with moving detail the wars he must fight in order to establish a line of leaders that will eventually lead to the Roman Caesars. (Thank you to Randy Ganiban for the blurb!)

The Aeneid will be read from at the following times:
Friday: 3:30 pm – 6:00 pm
Saturday: 10:00 am – 4:00 pm
Sunday: 10:00 am – noon (or until completed)

Baklava will be provided, and if you’d like to read (usually done in 30 minute increments), you also get a text and a nifty authentic Olympic crown* while you read!

*Crown made in present-day, not in Ancient Greece. No Olympic medals or achievement of world records included with crown.

Summer in the Lab

The dog days of summer may have passed (we hope) but the heat is on, with just over two weeks of school left and symposium projects galore. Cubicles in the library are filled to capacity, and the Wilson Media Lab is no exception. With a full fleet of tutors, we are working hard to meet the digital media needs of students, staff, and faculty.

Here’s just a taste of what we’re working on.

  • Faculty course websites for the fall semester
  • GIS mapping of trees on campus
  • 3D environments for the psychology department
  • Digitization projects for archives, professors, and the library

In addition to our long-term projects, the lab is busy every day with walk-ins making projects for classes, presentations, or research.

In other lab news, we’ll soon be updating the software image on the Mac towers, which will include an operating system upgrade, among other things. With each passing year, we hope to keep the lab up-to-date on technological/educational developments and continue to support the Middlebury community’s forays into the latest in electronic possibilities.

We’ve also recently installed a new color printer, so please be aware that students seeking color printing can be directed to us whenever the need arises. We’re always happy to help them, and anyone else, with media-related questions.
