Middlebury College has temporary access to ProQuest’s Environmental Science Collection, with full-text from over 1,400 publications including scientific journals, conference proceedings, reports, books, and government publications. Find information pertaining to a variety of topics in the Environmental Sciences including:

Trial access to three American history databases

Until June 25th, you can investigate these databases, focusing on 19th and early 20th century American History:

The American West (archives drawn from the Western Americana collections at the Newberry Library, Chicago)

Everyday Life and Women in America, c.1800-1920 (archives from the Sallie Bingham Center for Women’s History & Culture, Duke University and the New York Public Library)

Slavery, Abolition and Social Justice (drawn from the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, Duke University, U.S. Supreme Court, British Library, and others)

Trial access to historical “Washington Evening Star”

Through June 30th, the Middlebury College community can search a newly available historical newspaper, the Washington (D.C.) Evening Star. (After following the link, select the “Newspaper Titles” tab. Then you can select “Evening Star.”) Issues of the paper dated from Dec 16, 1852 – June 6, 1882 are now available.

The Middlebury College community can now access the eHRAF World Cultures and eHRAF Archaeology databases, research databases for all aspects of cultural and social life and for comparative archaeological studiesIn the 1930s, behavioral scientists and cultural anthropologists at Yale University’s Institute of Human Relations developed a classification of cultural information by subject. HRAF grew out of these efforts. Today, HRAF is committed to developing dynamic, fully-indexed electronic collections on the World Wide Web.

Trial access to Arabic ebooks

Through February 27, 2012, Middlebury College has trial access to the Kotobarabia Modern Arab Renaissance Collection, an electronic archive of books published between 1820-1914 from Egypt, Syria and the Islamic World. With over 2,500 titles, this collection covers humanistic, intellectual and scientific fields.

Digital National Security Archive

The Middlebury College Libraries now have access to the Digital National Security Archive (DNSA), a database containing over 500,000 pages of declassified documents gathered through the U.S. Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). The DNSA contains a range of policy documents including presidential memos, meeting notes, briefing papers, White House communications, email, letters, and other secret material detailing U.S.foreign and military policy since 1945. The original documents have been digitized and indexed to allow item and page-level searching.

Among the collections available through the DNSA are the The Berlin Crisis, 1958-1962, China and the United States: From Hostility to Engagement, 1960–1998, and Afghanistan: The Making of U.S. Policy, 1973–1990. Other collections are listed here.

The Library currently has access to Naxos, DRAM, and UlrichsWeb on a trial basis:

Naxos Music Library (trial access through 4/29/11)
Comprehensive collection of classical music which offers the complete Naxos, Marco Polo and Da Capo catalogues as well as Jazz and World music, educational products and a growing range of historical recordings featuring the biggest performers in the history of classical music.

DRAM (trial access through 4/22/11)
Scholarly music resource which includes CD quality audio, liner notes and essays from Composers Recordings Inc./CRI, New World, and other labels, focused on contemporary American and international art music.

Ulrich’s Web (trial access through 3/30/11)
“Information on more than 300,000 periodicals (also called serials) of all types: academic and scholarly journals, e-journals, peer-reviewed titles, popular magazines, newspapers, newsletters, and more.”
