Summer Language Display

chair

Welcome to all Language Schools Students!

We have a new and improved browsing display for everyone’s enjoyment:

NEW!  Dictionaries: a selection of basic dictionaries in each language is now in the browsing section.  These dictionaries cannot be checked out, they are there for quick use in the library.  Pink arrows on the floor take users to additional dictionaries in the Reference section.  Dictionaries in the stacks can be checked out.

NEW! Music CDs: by popular demand we now have some great music! We’ve selected CDs with songs in each language (no instrumental music). For Chinese, German, Hebrew, Portuguese and Russian, all song/vocal CDs are on display.  For French, Italian, and Spanish, we chose the most popular CDs (there are more behind the circulation desk).

Audio Books: we have expanded the selection of books-on-CD in each language.  Rest your eyes, and listen to a good book!

DVDs: movies! TV series! plays! documentaries!  We brought most of them to the display area, but some are still lurking in the “regular” DVD Browsing, so don’t forget to check.  Some DVDs require multi-regional DVD players, which is indicated by bright pink stickers.  And remember that  most popular English language movies have subtitles in Spanish, French, and other languages.

Browsing Books:  easy readers, timeless classics, graphic novels and comics – check one out, and enjoy it while sitting out on the lawn in the shade of a tree.

Tibetan Peace Flag-Making at Middlebury College Library, Oct. 1-14

Students and the whole Middlebury community are invited to the Davis Family Library to make Tibetan Peace Flags that will decorate the building for the visit of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. This is a chance to share your message of peace, thanksgiving and good will with the Dalai Lama and our whole community. Come and write your wishes, thoughts and prayers, or express your feelings by drawing or decorating your flag.

Tables with flag-making supplies will be set up in the library lobby from Oct. 1-14.  Flags will be on display in the library throughout October.

Happy Chinese New Year

The Library is expanding and improving the Chinese Collection!

A gift of 1,172 titles from Bowdoin College expands our Chinese collection to a total of 5,021 volumes. Many important works on Chinese philosophy, literature, and history were added. The gift books are marked with neon pink flags.

We have re-cataloged the existing Chinese Collection, so that now Chinese books are in the Library of Congress classification order for better access and subject browsing.

The updated records contain Chinese characters, corrected Pinyin transliteration of Chinese names and titles, and added subject headings. While Midcat displays, but does not currently allow searching using Chinese characters, such searches can be performed through WorldCat.

We are still working on this project (and re-cataloged books still need to be re-labeled) so if the item you would like to check out is not on the shelf, or if it is marked “in process” in Midcat, please request it by emailing mevans@middlebury.edu or library_circulation@middlebury.edu and we will get it to you as soon as possible!

Read local (and locally sourced books)

By sourcing new books for our Browsing Collection* from a local Middlebury bookstore, we’re making a choice to support a local, independent business and our local economy. There are are lots of reasons to “buy local” and now we’re adding GOOD BOOKS to that list. Now that’s reading local.

You can find our newest books on the New Books shelves and on the Browsing books shelves, located behind the DVDs on the main floor of the Davis Library.

*The Browsing collection is made up of recently published and bestselling fiction and nonfiction, science fiction, fantasy, memoirs, and biographies. Reading to feel good about, for lots of reasons.
