LIS Summer Picnic Wed 8/22 from 3:00-5:00pm

We hope that everyone in LIS (and their families/partners) can join us for the LIS Summer Picnic on Wednesday 8/22 from 3:00-5:00pm at the Hadley Barn on campus. The Hadley Barn is located just past the Kirk Alumni Center on Golf Course Rd.

We’ll provide the grills – please indicate on the sign-up sheet what you would like to bring or help with. Dogs and buns? Salad or brownies? Assorted mayonnaise-based side dishes? We could also use drinks and paper products, and help with set-up and clean-up. Please sign up for whatever suits you best. We can also accept cash donations and do the shopping for you.

Please be in touch with any member of the R&R Crew with questions. We’re looking forward to seeing you soon and celebrating the end of a great summer!

Conference report: “Adventures in Copyright: Navigating Your Way Through Intellectual Property”

I recently traveled to Baltimore to spend three days among “my people” at the Center for Intellectual Property symposium. My people, of course, are those who spend a lot of their professional lives thinking about copyright. Just a few weeks before the conference began, the long-awaited Georgia State e-reserves opinion was handed down. Perfect timing for this crowd. It was the talk of the conference, as was the Code of Best Practices in Fair Use for Academic and Research Libraries, which was released earlier this year. I’d previously taken several online courses through the CIP and was thrilled to see these engaging teachers, thinkers, and defenders of Fair Use in person. Plus my hotel room had a view of Camden Yard and I got to enjoy the National Aquarium on my way out of town. And I might have had a few crab cakes. Many of the talks were recorded and video is available online. My brief summaries of the talks are below. Continue reading

Winter Term Library Reserves

Winter Term is (deep breath!) around the corner, and Library Reserves is beginning to process print, media, and electronic materials for course work. We’re happy to create lists of reserve materials used in past semesters for you, and we can also easily restore old EReserve pages — please let us know if these options will be helpful.

Materials that your students will need to access during the busy first week of term must be received before the holiday break. Please email the Reserves Department with requests and questions: libres@middlebury.edu.

Need a refresher on how to make reserve requests? Check out this quick tutorial. And please don’t hesitate to be in touch!

Media needed for screenings: borrowing policies

This is a reminder that on the day of a scheduled screening, films may not be borrowed prior to the screening. Students may borrow films immediately after a screening, or on any day prior to the day of the scheduled screening, and regular reserve loan guidelines apply.

This policy is in place so we can guarantee that the media needed for a screening is accounted for, clean, and ready to go for a screening.

This policy has been in place for over a year, so students and faculty should already be aware of this policy and the need to plan accordingly. Please refer any questions to a Circulation Desk supervisor — we’re happy to help explain our policies to our borrowers.

Course Reserves

With Spring Term about to begin, Library Reserves is busy preparing print, media, and electronic materials for course work. The best way to contact the Reserves Department with requests and questions is through the Library Reserve mailbox: libres@middlebury.edu. Email is the best way to ensure a timely response to all Reserve needs. Please don’t hesitate to be in touch. We’re here to help!
