Sunday Morning Maintenance

This Sunday morning we’re planning the following activities:

(1)    Between 6:30 and 7:30 we’ll be applying some security patches to the Library server “zeppo”.  We expect a less than 10 minute outage of the following services:  MiddCat, My MiddCat, Ilsley cataglog, Sheldon catalog, the Millennium client used by library staff.

(2)    Between 6:30 and 7:30 we’ll upgrade the Service Building network connection to 10 Gbps from 1 Gbps .  This will interrupt all network services to the Service Building for less than 20 minutes.

(3)    Between 7:00 and 8:30 we’ll re-route the network fiber connections for Stewart.  This will interrupt all network services Stewart for less than 10 minutes.

(4)    Between 7:00 and 9:00 we’ll re-route the network fiber connections and switch out some associated infrastructure for McCullough.  This will interrupt all network services to McCullough for 2 less than 10 minute periods.

(5)    Between 7:30 and 9:30 we’ll re-route the network fiber connections that provide connectivity to the large dorms on the north side of campus.  This will interruption all network connections to these buildings 2-3 times for less than 2 minutes each.

(6)    Between 7:30 and 9:30 we’ll re-route the network fiber connections that provide connectivity to BiHall.  This will interrupt all network connections to BiHall for less than 2 minutes.

Sunday Morning Maintenance

The following maintenance actives are planned for this Sunday morning between 6 am and 10 am:

(1)    We will be optimizing routes between our Internet border gateway routers that may result in about a 1 minute interruption of Internet connectivity between 6 and 8 am.

(2)    We will be relocating network fiber connections to the buildings Stewart and Robert A. Jones house; between 7 am 10 am we expect there will be less than a 10 minute network interruption to each of these buildings.

(3)    We are upgrading our Central Authentication Service (CAS) system to incorporate a new guest registration system.  CAS is used to login to many of our web applications.  We do not expect an interruption of the CAS system be are performing this activity during our maintenance window as a persuasion.

(4)    We are upgrading the operating system on key sever farm network switches, however with recent high-availability configurations of our virtual server and storage infrastructure we will be able to migrate the affected servers to an alternative network switches in an alternative data center without interrupting service.  We are scheduling during our maintenance window of 6 am to 10 am as a precaution and also as a lower demand period as the migration will require higher than normal system, storage and network resources.

Sunday Morning Maintenance

The following activities are planned for this Sunday’s maintenance window between 6 and 10 am EST:

(1)    Between 6 and 8 am a maintenance is planned on the border gateway routers and other networking components that connect our network core with our Internet Service Providers.  There may be several short (less than a minute) interruptions of Internet connectivity.

(2)    There may be an extended outage of the Inter-library loan service between 8 and 10 am.

Sunday Maintenance

This Sunday morning during our established maintenance window we have the following items scheduled:

We will be upgrading the server infrastructure that supports the ticketing services (webtix, wintix) used by the box office and public safety.  There will be a less than 10 minute interruption of this service between 9:00 am and 10:00 am.

We will be upgrading a component on the server (Condor) that hosts Evisions MAPS.  There will be a less than 5 minute interruption of this service between 9:00 am and 9:30 am.

This Sunday morning during our established maintenance window between 6:30 and 7:30 am we’ll be making adjustments to routing protocols on our Internet gateway routers in order better balance traffic flows as well as upgrading a number of network appliances and testing fail-over functionality, there may be several less than a minute interruptions of Internet connectivity.

This Sunday morning during our established maintenance window we have the following network activities planned:

(1)    Between 6:30 and 8:00 am we’ll be making adjustments to routing protocols on our Internet gateway routers in order better balance traffic flows, there may be several less than a minute interruptions of Internet connectivity.

(2)    Between 6:30 and 8:00 am we’ll be transitioning how our firewalls connect to each other as part of their high availability configuration, there may be less than a minute of interruption of Internet connectivity.

Sunday Morning Maintenance

This Sunday morning during our established maintenance window from 6 to 10 am we will performing the following activities:

(1)    We will be testing our firewall high availability failover functionality as well as adding new interfaces to these devices.  There may be brief (less than a minute) interruptions of Internet connectivity between 6 and 7 am.  Note, an Internet connectivity interruption would include the VPN connections to Banner and MIIS.

(2)    We will be upgrading network infrastructure in Munford, a residential hall, that will also affect Meeker and the Self-Reliance house.  We expect an interruption of network services for approximately 15 minutes between 6:30 and 9:00 am.

(3)    We will be upgrading network infrastructure in the Marble Works, that will also affect the Stone Mill.  We expect an interruption of network services for approximately 15 minutes between 7 and 9 am.

Additional maintenance item Sunday Morning

Between 7 and 8 am we will be applying a maintenance patch to our redundant pairs of dns and dhcp servers at Middlebury and at MIIS.  We do not expect any interruption of service.

Also between 7 and 8 am we will be adjusting the system resource settings for the web servers of our primary web sites (www.middlebury.edu, www.miis.edu).  We do not expect any interruption of service.
