Middlebury was particularly successful during the 1970’s when they won their first ECAC championship in 1975, which was the first year the team qualified for post-season competition due to school regulation. This first ECAC championship winning team was coached by Bob Pfeiffer during his final year as the coach of the Middlebury team. The team continued their success for three more years winning again in 1976, 1977 and 1978 under coach Dennis Daly. In 1976 the team had a 16-1 regular season record losing only to Dartmouth. In the post-season the team defeated Boston State 13-7 in their first game, and Tufts 9-5 in the championship game. In 1977 the team achieved a 13-2 regular season record . Middlebury defeated Tufts 17-5 in their preliminary ECAC  Championship game and went on to down Williams 25-12 in the final. In 1978 the team won their initial game against Trinity 21-8 and faced Williams again in the final defeating them 22-8. The team won ECAC championship again in 1980, 1982, 1985, 1986, 1988, 1991, 1992, 1995 and 1997. NESCAC lacrosse teams were only allowed to participate in NCAA tournaments starting in 1994.
