S. finally understand the tradition that he is a part of. He is part of a storytelling tradition. It is a tradition of “stories that move outside time–that divert, oppose, resist.” His life is made out of words.

S. tells Sola to follow him down to the orlop deck. He writes best when he feels that Sola is nearby, and now Sola is finally, physically with him. Sola says that she will go with him to the orlop deck but that she cannot stay.

Like Straka, S. is a subversive writer, and like FXC, Sola does not write. Nevertheless, Sola and FXC both play crucial roles, helping to foster the vision of the writer.

S. feels a sudden anxiety. He needs to write, as though he were addicted to writing.
