S. sees that the red is darker in some places and feels sick. Maelstrom turns and throws him out of the room. This shows that S. is faint of heart, sensitive and is empathetic of other’s pain and suffering. There’s an electric hiss and smell of smoke and Maelstrom blows his whistle.

Although Calais is not referenced on the page, Eric comments on it and how it reminds him about his uncle. He feels his time on the boat and his decision to leave defined his life. While he resents his uncle for how it has shaped his life and his parents’ perception of him, he acknowledges that his uncle was not a bad guy.
He was just someone trying to do what made him happy and deal with what made him sad.
