Jen notes, “seems like it might be useful f someone were to get into Moody’s office + look around…” When Eric discourages her, she says, “If I’m not going to graduate, might as well go out with a bang.” She complains that her parents we not understanding of her trouble in school and told her that not graduating on time was “a deal breaker.”

A central conflict in the story is the influence that others can have on the formation of one’s identity. For Jen, these people her parents. For S., it is anyone who will talk to him and give him more of a clue of who he may be.
