p. 154

This page consists mainly of an inner dialogue that S is having with himself. Initially, S is contemplating what will happen to Stenfalk. He knows he will not manage to continue, and S pictures him falling to the ground and waving everybody else on. An hour of struggling through the mountain passes, and the group finds a creek. S takes a large gulp of his water when he realizes that the water has a very strange taste. He notices that the others are realizing this putrid taste and present foul smell as well.

Within the margins Jen highlights the passage discussing Stenfalk’s struggle and says, Crazy headache today. Dizzy too. Eric then responds saying, Slow down. Take a break. Sleep. Although this is unrelated to Jen and Eric’s main task, this cute banter shows that Jen and Eric have connected on a level beyond simply the text, and care about each other on a personal level as well.

Furthermore, Jen mentions a bag left in Grand Central station. Although not many details are given, one would be led to believe that they are discussing interactions between FXC and VMS. As Jen says, What was important enough to make her say she’d failed him? Eric then responds, “And if it was so important, why did he put it in her hands in the first place?” Based on context, it is clear that FXC felt she failed VMS for something she was apparently supposed to do. It is most likely possible that he was delivering her a copy of one of his texts, and something went wrong in the process. Either way, this is not discussed significantly again.
