p. 153

This pages regales us with the struggle of the group to escape those that are chasing them. Corbeau continues discussing the K, a group of mountain people that she remembers learning about when she was younger, but the idea of this group is quickly refuted by Pfeifer who is striving to get the group to move faster. As their speed increases it is quite apparent that Stenfalk is struggling to keep up. As the text states, “The exertion is taking a toll on Stenfalk, who is sucking in shallow breaths and sweating profusely, his face flushed with deep red,” (153). As this clear struggle is occurring, S and Corbeau share a look that demonstrates that they both understand that Stenfalk cannot go on in his current condition.

Within the margins, Jen and Eric discuss the unexplained events that have been happening to Jen. She has seen terrifying fires, unknown men in suits, and as Jen says, they do not know who they are up against. Eric then states that maybe they are not up against anyone besides Ilsa and Moody. Jen responds by saying, Then tell me who the guy in the suit is. Tell me who set the fires. Tell me who’s been breaking into my place. Eric then calmly responds by saying, I don’t know. All I know is we can’t afford to panic. They then do not discuss this until later, when Eric says “Glad we didn’t lay it all out here.” As this interaction shows, not only were they experiencing dangerous things at the time, but these unexplained events continued to happen. Furthermore, due to Eric’s last comment, one can be led to believe that the book may have eventually been read by others. This passage of commentary definitely shows that Jen and Eric are worried, and it intrigues the reader to want to learn more.

Furthemore, Jen and Eric discuss why Stenfalk is so sick. Eric states, “He’s Ekstrom, circa 1931.” This is not discussed further on this page, but is an important concept throughout the following pages.

Lastly, Jen states, Weird there’s no death certificate for her in Feira Nova. Although there are numerous Feira Nova’s throughout the world, one would assume that the Feira Nova mentioned is the one in Brazil, because Eric visited Brazil and it was crucial to their research. Furthermore, Eric sent a postcard to Jen from Feira Nova, Sergipe on the 15th of April. Eric and Jen continue discussing the death certificate of the unnamed women, most likely FXC, and they discuss whether or not she may have faked her death.

Postcard from Eric can be seen above.
