Pfeiffer and Stenfalk argue about whether S is to be trusted or not. S ran away from them initially to follow Sola but he returns to the wharf knowing that a bomb is about to go off. Pfeiffer defends himself by explaining that S used chasing Sola as an excuse to run away and that S does not actually truly know Sola. Stenfalk persuades Pfeiffer to trust S but it is clear that Pfeifer is still suspicious.

In the midst of this conversation, S asks Pfeiffer what he said to him as he ran away. Pfeiffer recalls saying, “You don’t know who your friends are.” Upon reading this, Eric mentions one of Desjardins’s students asking him if he knew of an obsidian piece that Desjardins had sent him. Eric replied,
“I didn’t have it,”
when in reality, Jen is keeping the obsidian. Jen has been studying the piece which “looks like

the abstract figure of a bird.” Keeping the obsidian piece in her apartment makes her nervous however, so she asks Eric to take it. He asks her to leave the piece in the book but Jen’s translates this as “You’re willing to risk losing the stone b/c you’re anxious about meeting me.”
