p. 47

As S. observes the night sky he recognizes constellations but they soon begin to morph. “The twins [of Gemini] have detached from one another” before his very eyes.  Eric makes reference to the various split twins in the story “Public vs. private?” or “Present self vs. past self” vs. possible self?” Each of these can apply to the character S. but they are also relevant to Straka. He was a man that could never be identified and throughout the book he seems to share small pieces of himself, for of which being his “split self.”

In a footnote, FXC shares a letter she once received from Straka. He was questioning the stars and what might happen if they were to be altered, “would it not cause one to scrutinize the totality of one’s surroundings carefully?” In a sense, this is exactly what is happening to S. He doesn’t know who he was before he woke up and he is still questioning his existence both in the past and the present. The movement of the stars is a reflection of S.’s struggle with identity.
