This page presents us with a rather large revelation by S, as well as an overall view of what make our lives important.

According to the Thoughts on S blog, the monkey represents S’s feelings.  Therefore, when the monkey acts with the goal to “interfere with the raging Vévoda’s sight lines” he is fighting evil without violence.  Simarlry, S decided to stray from his original plan, and instead let Edvar cause all the chaos he needed by making him drink a little bit of extra wine.  While earlier, S had fought all of this with ruthless killing, his one act of thought out trickery will create the most damage for his cause.1811_PoorAuthor_RichBookseller_byWashingtonAllston_MFABoston

Sola also points out to the reader that what makes life important “is the effort, the effort to resist” (453).  This idea stems from the theme of the novel of poor vs. rich.  The narrator argues that we have some duty to resist the rich’s power, and to make everyones lives better in doing so.
