Required Texts

The following texts are required for this course:

  • Frieden, Jeffry A., and David A. Lake. International Political Economy: Perspectives on Global Power and Wealth. 4th ed. Boston: Bedford/St. Martin’s, 2000.
  • Grieco, Joseph M., and G. John Ikenberry. State Power and World Markets: The International Political Economy. New York: W.W. Norton & Co., 2003.

The Frieden & Lake “reader” conveniently combines a broad range of the most significant contemporary writings concerning international political economy. These writings have been edited to provide students with the gist of the authors’ arguments in a bite-size form. (Frieden & Lake even include editorial notes recapitulating the authors’ arguments.) Students who find their interest piqued by a particular selection would do well to obtain and consider the original material.

The Grieco & Ikenberry text provides a rigorous introduction to the concepts and issues at the heart of IPE. This volume is available online for less than $40.

Frieden & Lake, by contrast, costs upwards of $80 online. Students, however, should note several caveats. First, the bookstore has obtained a number of used copies of the text which ought to run around $50. Second, the library has placed several copies of the text on reserve. Third, an electronic version is available online via:

All other readings are available either through the college’s electronic reserves or via the web addresses supplied.
