Hillary: Super PACs and Citizen United

“We have to end the flood of secret, unaccountable money that is distorting our elections, corrupting our political system, and drowning out the voices of too many everyday Americans. Our democracy should be about expanding the franchise, not charging an entrance fee.”

NY Times Article

Hillary’s plan to accomplish this:

  • Overturn Citizens United. Hillary will appoint Supreme Court justices who value the right to vote over the right of billionaires to buy elections. She’ll push for a constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United in order to restore the role of everyday voters in elections.
  • End secret, unaccountable money in politics. Hillary will push for legislation to require outside groups to publicly disclose significant political spending. And until Congress acts, she’ll sign an executive order requiring federal government contractors to do the same. Hillary will also promote an SEC rule requiring publicly traded companies to disclose political spending to shareholders.
  • Amplify the voices of everyday Americans. Hillary will establish a small-donor matching system for presidential and congressional elections to incentivize small donors to participate in elections, and encourage candidates to spend more time engaging a representative cross-section of voters.

Ready for Hillary

Pro-Clinton super PAC, renamed “Ready PAC,” supported Hillary for the two years prior to her official announcement to run for president. After the announcement, “Ready for Hillary” shut down in order follow the FEC rule that no super PAC may contain the name of the candidate or coordinate with the candidate. In total, the PAC raised 15 million dollars from 135,000 donors. The PAC worked with an organization called 270 Strategies.

Priorities USA Action

Priorities USA Action supported Barack Obama in his reelection campaign but announced in 2014 that it would begin to collect funds for Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential run.

We support Hillary Clinton for president because she will fight for everyday Americans and their families — so they get ahead and stay ahead.

Together we must call out the stark contrast between the progressive policies Hillary Clinton is fighting for and the backwards agenda the right is selling.

This super PAC has raised over $15 million dollars this year. Prominent donors of 2015 included big names from Hollywood, such as Steven Spielberg and Jeffrey Katzenberg, cofounders of Dreamworks.

Founded by David Brock, “Correct the Record” originally functioned within the opposition research group American Bridge 21st Century and fought to defend all Democrats from political attacks. Recently the PAC switched to solely support Hillary Clinton.

Going forward, Correct the Record will work in support of Hillary Clinton’s candidacy for president, aggressively responding to false attacks and misstatements of the secretary’s exemplary record. – David Brock
