How It Works

Overview

Green Dot is based on of the idea that collectively, small actions have large impacts. Green Dot empowers  individuals in a community to make small steps to reduce the number of people getting hurt in our community. These smalls steps very quickly become a movement, and this movement creates a culture shift. This culture shifts creates a community that says violence will not be tolerated, and we will all do our part to create a safer community.

Thousands in the US and around the world, and many on our campus, are victims of sexual assault, partner violence, and stalking every year. Each incident hurts us all. These acts of violence are like red dots covering a map, much like an epidemic spreading out of control if not stopped. But, we can stop violence if enough of us become a part of the solution. Through out words, our choices, and our actions in any given moment, we can add a green dot to our map – displacing a red dot – and making a difference.

A green dot is a single moment in time where someone makes the choice to make it less likely that a red dot gets on our map or sends a message to those around them that they don’t tolerate violence and they see themselves as a part of the solution. A green dot is intervening in a potential red dot situation, talking to your friends about violence, putting a green dot sticker on your water bottle – a green dot is simply your individual choice at any given moment to make our community safe. Once the green dots outnumber the red dots, rates of violence start to go down. With your help, we can make this happen.
