The idea of getting an unpaid internship used to be a very good one to demonstrate enthusiasm.

Unfortunately, with all sorts of legal liabilities, corporations are terrified to use such arrangements.

Technology is supposed to make it easy nowadays to learn about anybody and any company, and thereby get in. However, gatekeepers of all kind exist, from the electronic to the litigious. Employers are petrified of making hiring mistakes, and the last thing they want is to be held subject to either violating labor laws or wrongful termination suits from someone who wasn’t even employed by them.

Sorry, sometimes the more we advance, the more we fall behind. If only we could go back to the days that a handshake and good spirit was good enough.

Just know this so the rejection won’t catch you offguard.

This internship was one of the best decisions for my education I’ve made since coming to Middlebury. It was an incredible learning experience in terms of being able to see all the different kinds of organizations in our country designed to help people living in poverty. I was able to see what works–and what doesn’t– in order to more fully form an opinion and understanding of the current state of poverty in the US, and further my own personal goals and my idea of what our government’s goals should be in order to make our country a more livable place for its residents.

On top of all of this, I was a paid intern living in Manhattan for the summer– I didn’t have to worry about food, transportation, etc. and got to explore and live in probably the most exciting city in our country.

I highly recommend the Shepherd Internship program to any Middlebury student.

As a former intern I highly recommend this internship if you are interested to learn about the direct and indirect causes and consequences of poverty and people’s varied response to it. This experience has not been just an important element of my academic experience but also it had an impact on my personal life.

This blog is awesome! I love the timely articles and helpful advice that you post. I came in to the Center for Education in Action yesterday for a drop-in counseling appointment and overheard a couple of staff people talking about an April 5th Career Conversation and Recruiter in Residence for the State Department. Is that true? Ryan Palsrok probably won’t be able to make it but I sure will!

47 students submitted a total of 238 applications! I’m certain the sudden spike was a result of your tweet and blog posts. Word on the street is that there is a crazy big event happening on the 28th of February in Coltrane that involves a catapult or something having to do with springs. What’s up with that?
