PRE-VETS!
Note from Emily Picciotto ’09:
I was a 2009 Midd grad in Environmental Chemistry. I’m currently in veterinary school at Tufts University, and am a co-president of the Wildlife, Aquatics, Zoo, and Exotics Club (WAZE) here on campus. Every spring, we put together a day-long symposium with a theme that represents an issue that we as veterinary students and global citizens are facing. I know it’s a long drive, but we would love to have some interested Middlebury students at the event.
Sincerely,
Emily

Ps, There are actually 6 Midd grads at Tufts right now if any students are interested in veterinary medicine and have any questions or want to visit the school.

This year’s theme is: “The Human Impact on Wildlife and Exotics: the Good, the bad, and the Unknown.” The Symposium will be held Saturday, April 27th, 2013 at the Grafton, MA Campus. Through lectures and wetlabs, we will explore many different types of impacts that humans have on wildlife, aquatic, and exotic species. The Symposium will also emphasize the role that veterinary medicine can play in improving conservation and welfare efforts. Speaker sessions will address the following topics:
• Domestic cat impacts on wildlife populations
• The Ornamental Fish Industry
• Best Practices for Pet and Rehabilitated Turtle Care
• Large Whale Entanglement and Disentanglement
• Wild Horses on Public Lands
• Oil Spill Impacts on the Marine Environment

We periodically get notices from U Penn about their VMD/PhD. Here’s the latest:
Rabbits help lower cholesterol. Cats may lead to a breakthrough in the AIDS epidemic. And dogs have taught doctors new heart surgery techniques. Even lobsters help scientists understand Parkinson’s disease. Since the turn of the century, animal research has helped wipe out such diseases as smallpox and polio while increasing the human lifespan by 28 years. Whether it’s fighting epilepsy, finding a cure for Alzheimer’s or making progress in brain and spinal cord trauma, the link between human health and animal health is absolutely crucial.
The University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine provides an outstanding environment for the training of future veterinary scientists through our combined VMD-PhD program. It’s an excellent way for you to continue your education while impacting the future of medicine for humans and all species.
Who knows what today’s research could do for future generations? Find out more by visiting www.PennVetPhD.org

Over 60% of all infectious diseases of animals can also affect humans, and incidences of new, emerging zoonotic infectious diseases are on the rise. Veterinarian-scientists, by virtue of their broad experience in multiple species and extensive training in both molecular and whole animal contexts, are uniquely qualified to address the complex problems presented in modern biomedical research.

My current employer, Marlboro Village Veterinary Hospital located in Marlboro, NJ, is looking to hire someone to work as a veterinary technician. He or she is not required to have extensive vet tech training or skills, but must learn quickly as the business is fast-paced. I have been working at Marlboro Village Veterinary Hospital since September 2011 and have gained an immeasurable amount of skills, from intubation to dental prophylaxis scalings to client relations, etc. This job would be a great asset to any resume, and I urge Middlebury students, especially pre-veterinary students to apply.
Would you be willing to announce this to the Pre-Health Professions students to see if any soon-to-be-graduates would like to apply? If so, I have included the job posting below and if students have any questions about my experience at Marlboro Village Veterinary Hospital they are free to email me at f.alexa.warburton@gmail.com. Thank you very much for your time and help.
Cheers,
F. Alexa Warburton

Eko Tracks offers several study abroad programs in veterinary science and wildlife conservation, internship in wildlife conservation and park management, volunteer opportunities in wildlife rehabilitation, a field expedition and eco tours in southern Africa. These are specifically designed for students, nature and outdoor lovers, adventurers and other interest groups.
The veterinary study abroad program in South Africa is designed for students in veterinary science, vet tech or pre-vet with a focus on wildlife veterinary science, wildlife diseases and medicine, participation in capture and care of wild animals, breeding of rare species, wildlife rehabilitation, ecosystems and biodiversity conservation. The adventure-filled wildlife conservation program in South Africa focuses on field techniques, sustainable resource utilization, ecosystem and biodiversity conservation, game reserve and resort management, and game capture operations. The above programs are offered through lectures, field work and interactions with field vets, biologists and conservationists. These programs are endorsed by the University of Pretoria (South Africa) and the International Council for Game and Wildlife Conservation.
The wildlife internship is offered in a large biosphere reserve in South Africa where you will acquire knowledge in monitoring, population surveys including lions and elephants, habitat management, biodiversity and park management.
We also offer two volunteer programs in Namibia where volunteers work at a wildlife sanctuary with African wildlife including cheetahs, wild dogs, lions, baboons etc.. The second volunteer project is on a nature reserve focusing on big cat conservation and habitat restoration.
A unique field expedition, led by a wildlife ecologist explores the landscapes, ecosystems, diversity of wildlife, conservation challenges and parks of Namibia. You will experience behind the scenes activities and discover considerably more than on a typical African safari.
